Nooksack?

Has anybody fished the Nooksack near Marietta Slough? If you have what did you use and catch/ The river opens for salmon on 9-1 and I was hoping to give it a go this year since it is a short drive from my house.

I haven't fished that area - Marrieta scares me!

Before you go out to the Nooksack, check the regs. You're unable to retain any Pinks and must release all Wild Chinook and Wild Coho.

It should....... I used to live on Rural Ave just up the street from there. Fished all over, mainly for sea run cutts and steelhead. The sloughs were good when the cutts were running and the main river for steelies. I used to pull my share of steelies out of squalicum creek, my fave spot was the waterfall in cornwall park. That was 20 years ago though.

Best bet is to walk down to the river and check yourself. If they are jumping, they are still there..

Yeah, I've been down to the River and haven't seen an jumping. I did see some gill netters pulling fish out.

As I'm new to river fishing I was looking for some help. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Well I figured it's probably your best bet for finding out right away. As you may have noticed, washingtonlakes.com doesn't have a huge river fishing crowd, so it's probably likely that no one has your answers to the Nooksack, and your best bet to get a quick and reliable answer is to look at the river. Look at it in the early morning or evening. Thats when there is the most activity. If they ain't jumping they aint there...

Sam is right on this one. The fish may be there, but if they are not jumping or rolling they are not there or they won't want anything to do with biting your lure anyways. Don't get me wrong you can catch salmon when there is no activity, it's just that you have a much better chance of success if the fish are actively showing themselves. This rule applies mostly to salmon in rivers. Good luck.

I went and checked it out tonight.......nothing. I was walking near the river from 6:30 to 7:30 and took a drive to a few bridges. I just got back and it is 8:05 pm. So would you say there aren't any fish? Why do some rivers have fish in them and others dont? I'm sure there are many variables but do some have more of an influance than others? The area I checked has heavy gill netting going on. I saw a netter pull a few fish out the on Saturday.

Certain rivers all have different spawning fish in them. Many bigger rivers host a lot of salmon, but some smaller ones are known to sometimes be a king salmon or coho river...

Try taking the water temperature. That may be a variable.
