do wedding ring "flash lites" work well?

Post by kingcatcher » Sat Feb 21, 2009 12:52 pm

i was just wondering if the mack "flash lites" work. i bought the chartruese version of them but have not got to use it yet. i have used the big mettal blades called the ford fenders but i think the flash lites will have less friction so if anyone has used them then can you help tell me if they work.

They do have less friction and are lighter, but they don't provide the noise/vibration that attract fish as well as metal blades...They do provide flash and some noise, but I feel that those Ford Fenders and similar metal bladed Pop gear are effective because of the metal blades making the vibration and noise which in turn attract the fish.

That being said, I do have the Flash Lites, as well as 4-5 other pop gear sets, but still rarely use and of them....

Absolutely yes they work. I use flash lights while trolling for Silvers/Kokanee in Lake Chelan in the spring and they work great. We troll them in front of a wedding ring spinner baited with a single piece of white shoepeg corn. It's known locally as the Chelan silver set up. Dave Graybill has a nice article about it on his web site http://www.fishingmagician.com/Stories/ ... helan.aspx if you don't use this set up in Lake Chelan when fishing for Silvers/Kokanee chances are that you'll go home without fish. The photo below is from last spring. I'm holding both mine & my daughter's fish.

You want to make Flashlight blades noisier? Use a paper punch and punch a hole in the mylar wing. Also works great on getting more noise out of Spin & Glo winged bobbers.

I've used them successfully, especially when fishing for Kokanee. However, I'm not sure that you need a bunch of noise for Kokes, they seem to be more of a sight and scent type fish. I like them as you can really slow down to a crawl and the things will still turn over and get the job done. I heard that they work on walleye but haven't yet tried them in that application.

I agree with Big-D. They work great and without the heavy drag you get with traditional pop gear or ford fenders. The fight will be far less hampered with a Flash Lite than with the heavy pop gear which is nice and your pole won’t be bent during the troll like it's on a down rigger. I use the Flash Lite when the fish aren't biting and it usually produces bites. You can troll anything behind a Flash Lite but find the Mack's wedding ring with a worm does the trick. Anyway, it definitely can't hurt to have a few Flash Lites in your tackle box. I like the hole punch idea as well Wolverine. Good call!
