Northwest Fishing Reports

Does anybody know how the trout fishing is at Liberty Lake? I've read the reports and they all seem to be about bass fishing. I only live about 6 miles from the lake, and have up until now only been able to fish it during the weekends. I really don't like the launch, as it only has one ramp, and on the weekends it's quite crowded. Now that I'm not working, I'd like to have a close trout lake that I can fish during the week. So, how's the trout fishing anybody?

Liberty has some really big trout in it, both Rainbows and Browns. The monster Browns can be caught in the spring or the year on the S.W. shore where the rock cliffs are, fishing Rapala minnows, (reg. or jointed) with a VERY fast jerking retrieve. Fish to 10 pounds are not uncommon.The Rainbows can be caught in many ways, but I think trolling a flatfish or wedding ring behind a flasher is your best bet for larger fish. I hooked the largest Rainbow trout I had ever seen in Liberty about 20 years ago. It was a true monster. You can read the story about "The Lunker of Liberty Lake" here;

we've caught some nice rainbows and browns in the early spring over the tops of weeds. A couple years ago, we caught ten fish, with half over 4 lbs....

Joe, the problem with Liberty is that during the summer, the hatch that seems to be most prolific is the string bikini, and PWCs.

Due to the fairly shallow depth, and high water temperatures, and heavy boat traffic, fishing at night would be best to get the trout more active, but they close the launch every night and run us out.

Once, and I mean ONCE, I took my boat out before the launch was closed and fished all night, having my wife take the trailer away and come back the next morning. I caught so many LMB, Browns, and Rainbow that I thought I was in heaven. Still, it made for one LONG LONG LONG night.

We have hit it on three early spring days three years in a row. Our first day was a horid day with winds and snow and whitecaps. We caught many very nice bows. the meat was orange, and they cooked up nice. We were throwing 3" minnows into the shallows on the West and South end of the lake. Nailed them. The next year, Rapalas were the ticket. We were throwing them. This year, no love. Next year, Roosevelt. I like to eat my catch, and those brood stockers tend to not have the quality of meat on em as other rainbows in other lakes.

Liberty is not all brood stock. Still,they put a lot of them in there.

Nope, the only launch, public launch, is closed at night and they ticket you if you are inside the launch area. Like I posted before, you much launch before dark, remove your vehicle from the launch area, then stay out all night long, then leave after the launch is opened back up, then you can fish at night.

Yes, there are Walleye in Liberty, planted to control the huge perch population, but ...........
