baitcasters?

Post by big fish lite line » Mon Apr 06, 2009 6:27 pm

anybody ever use baitcasters for trout fishing?

I own a nice shimano bantam reel and am looking to match it with a baitcasting rod in which I could use 4-8lb line. I do alot of trolling and figured it might be something cool to try. I might try to convert a spinning rod or possibly fly rod into a casting rod because I'm on a pretty limited budget.

i got a small baitcasting rod that is only about 5 feet and has a reel nice soft tip... i was thinking about using it for trout since i couldnt get much use out of it for bass fishing. you can have it if you want to pay for shipping or come get it. perfect for trolling if you ask me

Im just starting to use a baitcaster this season. I do fine with heavier lures but foul it every time using trout sized gear.

Sure baitcasters will work. If you plan on trolling you won't have a problem. I have about 6 rod/reel combos, all baitcasters which I use for salmon, bass, walleye, catfish. Once in awhile I'll troll for trout. I personally think they are easier to troll with for letting out line. Like RaMcVey said, they aren't "meant" for really light tackle like a worm&marshmallow. You can make adjustments to the reel for tackle weight though.

you might want to check the gap at the edge of the spool if you are thinking of using 4 lb test. Don't want it to get caught.

Ya, I use them a lot. Just remember, the right tool for the right job. Light lines and light lures are better tossed with spinning gear.

As zen leecher aka Bill W warned, check your spool to make sure the super fine line cannot get between the spool and the frame first. Additionally, the reel will need to be pretty good to handle the light weight lures without backlashing.

I often toss 3/16 to 5/8 oz lures at trout, and Bass Pro Shops make so pretty good rods for about $100 that are 7' long, two handed casting, and rated for 1/8 to 5/8 oz. I am using 100+ reels to do this, but I get away with it sometimes with an old Bass Pro Shops brand reel, so it depends.

Still, your implied question, can you make your own from an existing spinning rod, yes. I am putting one together this year from components I am going to buy. You could, if you really wanted to, convert an existing spinning rod. Still, check around. White Elephant had a 7' light action two handed baitcaster for $39.95 here in Spokane a week ago, so one never knows what you can find.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
