This is what I found in "Trout & Salmon of North America" by Robert J. Behnke:
"Generally, Pacific trout (rainbow and cutthroat) spawn from late winter to early summer and Brook Trout, Atlantic salmon and Brown trout spawn from late summer to early winter. There is a tremendous amount of variation in time of spawning in all species of trout, salmon and char based on local environmental changes."

Temperature does play a part in it, however the timing often depends on spring runoff. From what I gathered, it can get very complicated.

I'll second the above explanation, with a follow up. Most trout are now the result of hatchery's. Many states have intentionally worked to develop "strains" that spawn at various times of the year - mostly for hatchery convince and production efficiency.

I saw a strain of Browns that spawned in the Spring in the Snake River near Idaho Falls Idaho, and some Brooks that tried to Spawn in Henry's Lake in Idaho.

Still, for the most part, the above times are the generally accepted times.
