Questions for the WDFW

Post by YellowBear » Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:01 am

I have a few questions to ask of the WDFW.
As we have had representitives of the WDFW visit this web site, I thought this might be a place to ask a few of these questions.

#1 Other than Potholes,What types of habitat projects are being conducted?
#2 Have there been any studies done on spawning beds in any of our lakes?
#3 What plans have been made to replace or replenish the prey base for our smaller fish, Crappie, Perch and Bluegill?
#4 Are there any plans in the future that will enhance our warm water fisheries?

If anyone else has questions for the WDFW please add them to this forum.

Sorry but I had to chuckle about your warmwater questions. The WDFW's answer to all of them would be "dude, we did a warmwater study and rehab program 10 years ago, what more do you want from us? We're sure everything is still fine." Especially the spawning bed one. I can hear it now..."what's a spawning bed?"

Here's my question.

Why do I have to pay $7 for the launch at Long Lake (Spokane), when it's easily one of the worst launches in the state? It's never maintained and the only time a Ranger shows up it's to collect money from the fee box or to write someone a $120 ticket for not paying. The fee actually went up from last year, and the launch somehow actually sucks worse. Long is the best lake anywhere near Spokane, so of course the state has made it one of the hardest to access. They simply do not want you to use this lake. None of the launches open before 6:30 am, the DNR launch that is the only decent one is in the middle of nowhere and is gated all winter on a year round lake (as a matter of fact this year I believe it didn't even open until Memorial Day, just like the resort launch), and the 9-mile launch is absolutely horrible and borderline dangerous, yet nothing is done to improve it. At the DNR launch there is a paid campground host that actually locks the gate to the boat launch every night at 10, just to make sure no one can go fishing early in the morning.

It has been brought to my attention that the WDFW has determined that Leech's do indeed carry the VHS virus.
Could you tell me were I can find the information on the study that was done to bring the WDFW to this conclusion?

I have found some information to my question about Curlew.

It seems they have had a net pen project going on up there that produce's 80,000 fish a year.
Curlew also gets an additional 150,000 a year from the State.
230,000 fish a year for a 870 acre lake? :-"

I have also found information that indicates that Sprague is "still" not drawing the crowds of anglers that were expected.

Why is it, that the WDFW will publish exact information on Trout enhancement and little or nothing on warm water species?

Because the political environment in Washington is that Warm Water Species are non-native and were it possible they should all be exterminated??????????

That is kind of the impression I get anyway. Too bad, we have some great water for warm water fish, as can be seen by some of the bass and tiger photos we get on this site.

Oh ya, sorry for sounding dumb, or at least uninformed, but what is VHS virus?

The VHS virus is a nasty bug your video tapes get when left in close proximity to TellaTubbie videos....#-o

Actually, it is pretty nasty if your a fish - VHS 101 http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/vhs/vhsfacts.html

The clinical signs of VHS include hemorrhaging in the muscle tissue and internal organs, pale organs, and bulging eyes.

Interesting, and disturbing. I like fishing with leaches, and when I saw that Idaho had outlawed the use of leaches and water dogs this year I was, well, a bit Pizzed off.

Now I have a different view, and am glad that I have not got around to buying any in the last four or five years.

IF leaches do carry VHS, and if the web site is correct in that we already have a strain of VHS, just how prevalent is it?

Anglingarcher,
It seems that the VHS that we have here is mostly in our salt water.
It has been found in Salmon and Herring from what I have been able to find.
Our inland lakes are okay but any River that has a Salmon run is suspect.

In the lakes that have a size limit for Crappie, how did the WDFW come up with the nine inch limit?

Holy cow!! I found this great website www.nwwarmwater.org it has absolutlely no information on it. But it does have a great mission statement. check it out for all your VHS information and fantastic web links to nothing that appllies to this forum at all you'll love it!! And for 25 bucks you can sign up and get what? Not sure it doesn't say. What do the fishermen win Bob? Hell looks like abunch of misinformed information with no good proof to back any of this gibberish up. Thats great Bob I can do alot with nothing....but wait theres more...not really I just made that up!! Have a wonderful day trying to scare people!!

I really like you Yellowbear but really, come on man!! You have a direct link to the WDFW ask the question yourself instead standing there and not asking. Defeats the whole purpose of promoting the NWWF. We'll have a beer sometime and have a heck of a good time. Peace bro!
