I was thinking about heading out this weekend and thought I'd change it up a bit and try a lake for once. Does anyone know of any lakes in Pierce or Thurston counties that are good this time of year or would it be a wasted trip?

Lake Kapowsin,Tanwax,Alder,Mineral,Ohop to name a few. Youd have to check regs on whats open or not. I fished all these lakes before but usually in the spring /summer months.I never really think of fishing as a waste of time.Catch or not I just enjoy being out there.

Never a waste of time, understanding the species of the fish your after is key. Seasonal shifts, calendar periods and forage
will get you started in the right direction. Then you'll be able to pick areas and techniques that match what the fish are doing.
Good fishin!

Try checking the lakes stocking program too on the wdfw site. See if there are any that have recently gotten stocked or got stocked during the fall, they might be better bets than others that haven't been stocked since last spring.

I guess "waste of time" was a bad choice of words, but thatnks for the tips anyway. Do any of you know of any lakes that are doing good right now though?

I bank on folks thinking that fishing for trout is a waste of time during the winter months. Nothing I enjoy more that getting out on the lake with no one else around. Ask around, winter trout are almost always better tasting fish than what one catches during the summer and fall and always better than freshly stocked fish. True there aren't as many around to catch, but the stockers that have made it this far have fully adapted to the waters in which they were planted and have got some color to their meat. You can catch them from the bank or chase them with watercraft, just be a bit more stealthy in the approach and you will find success. American puts out some huge fish this time of the year, just cruise the reports.

You'll never know unless you try and then write a report.

my brother and I have a history of catching nice trout trolling to our duck blind at Kapowsin. so that has been an OK winter fishery for us.
