Fishfinder issue
So I'm baffled. I have a Humminbird 727 fishfinder that came with my new-to-me boat. Its not the best but seemed to work fine until yesterday. I was in the sound off Edmonds and it would show water depth at 54 feet, where it is at least a couple hundred feet (the downrigger was down 70). I then dropped the boat in Lake WA and it was showing bottom at 119 feet no problem. I downloaded the manual and can't find anything about an adjustment for saltwater or deep water. Any suggestions?
Thanks Guys!!

Re: Fishfinder issue
Could be a bunch of different things. The range, zoom, angle of the transducer, so many things. The first thing I'd do is read the manual and reset to all the default settings and go from there. The next step would be to call their tech support. You will get a lot of experts responding, take it all with a grain of salt. They haven't seen you're setup and they don't know how the previous owner set it up. Go to the defaults and start with a clean slate.

Re: Fishfinder issue
I have a couple of suggestions, though it could easily be something else, possibly more serious:
- when this happens, check to see if there is any seaweed/algae or other junk wrapped around the transducer or if you could be hovering over your anchor line
- make sure that your transducer is aimed correctly
- when out of the water, look to see if your transducer is badly scratched up - depending on placement any boat type/use, it could be getting badly roughed up as the boat is dragged up onto the beach - you might need a new one

Re: Fishfinder issue
the angle of the transducer i found out recently can really tweak your readings... mine needs to be as vertical up and down as possible. also power supply, if batteries (mine runs on batteries) are low i get false readings or it just has issues turning on and off. another thing i notice with my hummingbird is if i turn it on out of water and then stick it in the water after, it can take a while to calibrate.. or say i pull it out of the water and then put it back in.. same thing.. i usually just reboot it while in the water.
Re: Fishfinder issue
If the previously mentioned things don't seem to pan out, your sensitivity might be set too high. My Eagle would false on the DR ball if I was running the sensitivity too high. Saltwater interferes with the sonar more and decreases it's depth capability.
Hope it's an easy fix.

Thanks guys!! The transducer is on the side with the DR ball, so i'll reset it to factory settings and move the DR and then go down the other things.

Check on Humminbird's website and make sure you have the latest firmware.

Above link, if it isn't too big, is for a whole page of Humminbird forums. You can always run your questions by other Humm. users. Good luck.

Hi Guys, I thought I'd share the results, no matter how embarrassing....seems after re-reading the manual there is in fact a fresh/saltwater setting, so Bodofish was right on the mark. It still isn't working entirely properly, but is showing the depth most of the time.
Thanks again for all your help. Next time I'll start with a second read of the manual!!
