Spinner reel advice
I need to buy a new lightweight reel for my high lake hiking adventures. My old one is shot and clunks every time I reel in.
Any suggestions?
Preferably:
-$20-50
-handles maximum 6#test line.
-small, compact
-durable
-spinning reel
-adjustable drag
and that's what I'm looking for. Thanks guys.
Links and pics would be a great help!

Pick up a little Shimano spin casting reel for around $30.00...they last forever and are cheap as dirt, with strong quality and performance.Rabbits wrote:I need to buy a new lightweight reel for my high lake hiking adventures. My old one is shot and clunks every time I reel in.

Shimano AX 2000. They last forever and can be purchased for $10 -$15 at most stores. I like the original one the most but they have the new one for around $20, but I have never used it. I have 1, so does my girlfriend, 2 of my friends, and my other buddy has one of the newer ones, my sister and my mother also have one as well.
They also make the RX, A and R model. They come in 3000 and 4000 as well but thats just a bigger model of the same reel

RE:Spinner reel advice
Shimano...
Senora or Sedona...
Either one are great reels for under $40-$50...
Can't go wrong with Shimano's...Most of my oldest reels are Shimano's
EDIT forgot to mention, every Shimano spinning reel comes with a spare spool. Definitely a nice thing to have, one 6lb spool and a 10lb spool for different applications...
Quantam's are also good reels from what I hear. Last one I had I bought over 3-4 years ago. Finally crapped out this year and I used it in the saltwater quite a bit and never lubed it up properly...A couple shots of WD40 here and there...The reel still works but has some sound effects to it that I can't fix nor can I stand...

RE:Spinner reel advice
i would say do NOT buy a quantam reel if it is under 30$
i made that mistake and wont do it again. the reel may just be defective but with slack line it feels like you are reeling in a small perch, the bearings may be shot but i have no clue.
you cant go wrong with a shimano.

Ditto on Sams thoughts. I have two Quantam InCytes, around $49 at Sportsmans, 11 bearings I believe, spare spool, nice size and pretty light. Like them so far..Sam Kafelafish wrote:Shimano...

RE:Spinner reel advice
Shimano makes the best reels. I've had mine for 8 years and it stills works and runs like a charm. Great little lake set-up I have. Can't wait to use it...do you guys spool your reels with 4LB test for trout or 6LB test?
RE:Spinner reel advice
Depending on the line I buy...Every mono is different. Some are much stronger then the lb. test they print on the box...kuttkilla wrote:Shimano makes the best reels. RE:Spinner reel advice
i use 4lb or 2lb its way thinner and harder to see for wary trout

Sweet I use 4 too...so I am downgrading from 6 last year. I think it should help me get on some Pine Lake brownies.Fisherman_max wrote:i use 4lb or 2lb its way thinner and harder to see for wary trout

RE:Spinner reel advice
For trout, I use the reel that came with my Kmart $10 combo. It did just fine on the Pine Lake browns a few years ago. 8 or 10 lb test line on it-- I don't remember-- the line came with the reel when I got it at Kmart back in 1996. I don't think I've changed the line on it since the original purchase, and so it could be 10 year old line. The trout don't seem to care.

RE:Spinner reel advice
I have the cheepo Quantum reel right now (the one that busted).
I cannot use another kmart reel, sorry. I do alot of high lake fishing and it sucks when your reel has a flat spot in it when you have arrived... twelve miles later.
But, being a poor college student I cannot afford a nice reel. So I think the Shimano sounds the best, with my discount I can get it for around $30 at joes. For the nice one, pretty sweet.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it is much appreciated.
And for those Alpine pics to kevinb... How do I go about posting pics? Photobucket or something?

Photobucket is really easy. And it's all online so you can share your albums with others...Rabbits wrote:I have the cheepo Quantum reel right now (the one that busted).
