Trolling tidewater Sno for Silvers?

Post by BARCHASER10 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 1:51 am

Around Seattle, I've always been a saltwater fisher for Silvers. Thought I'd try trolling the tidewater Sno this year. I have trolled for Silvers quite a bit in the Columbia off the mouth of the Cowlitz. Down there we trolled small spinners and Brads plugs, Mag Warts, even Flatfish sometimes, usually with an oz or two of weight. I would prob troll around where we fished Pinks, from Lowell up to the bridge at Snohomish.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Matt? I have the same question for you and you have till tomorrow morning to possibly answer it :

Reason is I might be going to the Sno myself but I will be starting down stream from the boat launch at the park.

Silvers will usually enter the river on an incoming tide. 2 hours into it there should be fish around the airplane hole. Next up would be just above the Pilchuck. last would be the Snohomish city drag. From the mouth to above the Hwy 2 bridge the fish usually have their heads down, mouth shut, moving fast, and not biting. The lower river is full of junk (old sunken boats, logs on the bottom, logging chains, etc. So don't try to run your plugs in the mud as the bottoms grabby. If you see jumpers they're fun to look at but really aren't biters. If you're going to fish the ebb from Snohomo down troll down stream. Fish are more grabby when they see something coming at their faces than they are something coming up from their tail. If you find biters don't leave them. Pound the daylights out of the pod as Snohomish silvers are well known for having serious lockjaw most of the time.

Plugs in the lower Snoho can be very effective. My favorite spot is the long stretch just around the corner below Lowel/Rotary. I would say don't limit yourself, I've caught fish from there to just below the 2 bit hole. Plugs; Brad's, Wardens or what ever. Ive used about any color combo out there. The lower river is a bit turbid so stay with flourescent colors, orange and chartruce, the flashing ones are great. The key would be to get the plug on the bottom, if you aren't hitting the bottom, you aren't catching fish, what ever it takes. In 8 to 12 feet I do about 70 pulls plus or minus. In Steamboat or one of the other sloughs you may need some weight and it may be tough, there is a lot of crap on the bottom. Go for gusto, let us know how it goes.
