Meeting #2 tonight at Kapowsin Elementary 6:30-8:30

Proposed Lake Kapowsin Aquatic Reserve

Lake Kapowsin is proposed as an aquatic reserve because it is a rare, undeveloped, Puget lowland lake that contains important habitat for fish and other species. It was created 500 years ago by the Electron mud flow in the Puyallup River, drowning a forest of large trees.
Department of Natural Resources is hosting a second open house about the proposed Lake Kapowsin Aquatic Reserve to build upon the discussion from an Oct 2nd meeting. At the first meeting, DNR provided information on Aquatic Reserves, and community members provided ideas, comments and questions on the proposal.

So, are they going to say we can't fish the lake anymore? Or can't use gas motors? Or no big boats, hand carry only? No boat launch/take away the boat launch? Or change it to 'no fishing from a floating device'?

^^^ Sounds just about right, what a shame , used to provide great waterfowl hunting out there. First they take out all hunting on Rapjohn now by the looks of it their going to shut down Kapowsin. Good luck to the next generation on finding a way to get out and show your kids how to hunt/ respect what God has givin' us. Hope all that tree huger crap stays on the West Coast. it appears that becoming an aquatic reserve is a good thing. part of the reserve program is encouraging and improving access. Basically becoming a reserve just ensures that it will be a space where the next generation will be able to go and it will still be like you remember it. with the budget issues in this state who knows, but i think this really is about protecting the area from invasive species and maintaining current biodiversity through management and testing.

Before we get our tippet all in a twist, lets just hope the difference in "Aquatic --Preserve--" and "Aquatic--Reserve" some how leaves room for still some public access and such.
Let us know what they say, Kevin.

Goals for the Lake Kapowsin Aquatic Reserve
 Conserve and enhance these native habitats, and protect and restore the functions and natural
processes of this freshwater lowland lake and associated wetlands.
 Preserve existing low impact public use and enjoyment of the lake, such as fishing.
 Promote stewardship of riparian and aquatic habitats and species by providing education and
outreach opportunities, and coordinating with resource managers, neighboring landowners, Tribal
agencies, angler groups and non-governmental organizations.
 Protect opportunities for scientific research such as geologic investigations of the lake’s origins
and tree ring evidence.

After spending all that money and redoing the launch I can't imagine them closing it a couple years later. Then again, maybe I can... #-o

Hey folks, overall it was a good meeting but it's apparent that their are some special interest groups that have other ideas for this area. Things I don't rather care for but others might be fond of. I will gladly jump back in here, need to get my son ready for school and taking my daughter skating. Their will be a 3rd meeting as well (Date not announced yet) Plenty of good information, ideas but I quickly got a small taste in politics/lobbyists. I was pleased with DNR overall.
