Fishing & Hunting News Magazine Discontinued

"Fishing & Hunting News Magazine Discontinued

AUG. 1, 2008—Outdoor Empire Publishing has announced that it will discontinue publishing Fishing & Hunting News magazine effective with the recently distributed August 7, 2008 issue.

Outdoor Empire Publishing will continue the association memberships that allow it to publish our three tradeshow product guides (for SHOT, ICAST, and NRA). It will also seek to sell those publications, the Fishing & Hunting News brand, Web site, and related assets.

Bill Farden founded Fishing & Hunting News on April 1, 1954 and it has had a mission to serve the outdoorsman and the outdoors industry ever since. It is with regret that Outdoor Empire Publishing decided to end the consumer print version that embodied that mission. Unfortunately, outdoor industry consolidation and the recent state of the economy have resulted in a declining business climate for much of the magazine industry. Outdoor Empire Publishing has taken this sad but prudent step in recognition of those facts."

They are good magazines, good summaries of stuff, nothing really unique, but with the internet technology, tons of information is available at the click of a mouse which seems to be driving old forms of media out.

I do love that it is a local media. I can go buy Field and Stream, Salmon Trout Steelheader, but FH News was all about WA. Too bad. It might have been old information or pretty basic stuff, but it was always fun to read. Great primer articles too...

I subscribed to WA Fishing and Hunting News for two years but didn't renew after the second year (this was a few years back) because I thought it was expensive. Nothing bad to say about the magazine, I enjoyed it very much.

NO WAY! This is the first I have heard of this. I will have to do some investigating.
So what does this mean for subscribers like myself. I just started my year subscription.
Do they continue to put out issues and sell the rights? Or stop completely until someone buys them out right and the new company produces issues?
This sux.
One of the greatest fishing and hunting magazines ever. The best information and quality articles.
Love this magazine btw.

I will have to check this out also as I'm 8 months into a 3 year subscription.

Maybe they will refund the $$$ to existing subscribers.

My email:

[email protected]

Tom,

I just read that F&H news is being cancelled. I'm 8 months into a 3 year subscription. Are you planning on refunding the remainder of my subscription...or.. What's the plan? I didn't see any information about this on the website.

thank you,

Me too, guys. I am into a 2 Year subscription (my second) by only a month. They even called me at home to promote subscription sales. Not blaming them, these are tough times and I hope all the great guys; Andy Walgamott, Randall Peters, etc. are going to be able to continue their outdoor/sports writing careers, at least in an on-line format?
I think there is an albatross in the publishing world, too; newspapers are old technology and it may seem strange to us to not read a newspaper, but just ask your kids which format they prefer. Welcome to the cyber world of mags and newspapers.
I will miss it, tho; there is something about settlin' down in a big 'ol chair, to read articles held in your hands.

I found out today when I looked at the website for info about the current salmon areas. There are a few commentaries under the Washington Tab from some of the long time writers that spare no editing for their feelings about sudden job loss. I hope another publisher will pick up the slack with a local magazine. It was a huge thrill to see myself or someone I knew pictured or mentioned in the magazine.

Even with the internet it is nice to have some reading material around the cabin, or throneroom to peruse.

Exactly,
Technology moves so fast but theirs just something about a magazine or newspaper. You can read them on your own time and not have to sit infront of the computer.

You are currently interacting and reading what is the future of news. The cost of production of printed materials is becoming prohibitive and you can access the internet almost anywhere now days. I think that in the not to distant future, printed news will go by the way of the telegraph.
I have watched this website grow over the years and the information coming from the readers is current and very valuable. My crystal ball tells me in a just a few years, this site is going to be one of the largest sites for fishing information in the country.

If Marc is right about this site becoming one of the leading fishing sites in the country, they should change the name. Washington Fishing. I'm positive it exists but this site includes Saltwater, Freshwater, Rivers, Shellfish. Some people are lured away by just hearing lakes.
Kyles Outdoor Adventure Fishing Services check it out?

Here's what I got as a response:

Dear Subscriber:

All of us who worked for Fishing & Hunting News were saddened by its closure, which came about very suddenly. For that reason we did not have a “communication plan” for our readers. But here is what we know now:

The company does not today have the funds to be able to refund the balance of the cost of your subscriptions. But we are seeking to sell various assets to meet those and other obligations. At the same time we hope there is a second possible solution for our readers. Traditionally, when the sad event of a magazine closing happens, publishers of other magazines like it will volunteer to take over the subscription and give you the same value with their magazine. (If you already take that particular magazine they will add to the length of your subscription.) This may take 8 weeks or more. We will update you on this effort as soon as possible.

For those of you who sent a payment for an order that included a premium gift that you have not yet received, we are crediting an additional amount to your account. Unfortunately that is all we can promise at this time. Our staff will be much smaller as we wind down. Please be patient with our efforts and trust that we will be doing our best, as we always tried to do with Fishing & Hunting News.

Sincerely,
Staff

The economy sure has kicked some people in the shorts... I hope this all works out. Sux feeling jipped by companies and not having any recourse for refunds. Makes it hard to entrust anyone with my money. I finally got my retainer back from Olympic Boat Center (Chapt 11 bankruptcy)

That sucks. My first year fishing I was in FHN back 2 back issues with LM caught at Potholes. I have always enjoyed checking it out at stands, but rarely buy it. Maybe thats why it is discontinued. We will always have WL.Com though:)

Got the letter too. :thumbdown I'm pissed.
Even with the economy the way it is, they have the right to take our money and run. I just recently bought a subscription. So all my money is gone for nothing?
Either give me my product or my money back.
They'll keep hearing from me until I get reimbursed. Loved the magazine but this has left me very frustrated with them.
