Boat issues

Post by blufin loui » Tue Feb 24, 2009 11:01 am

In reply to HammerinHonkers & SalmonKing.

Ole Blue has fathfully plugged along for me for 14 years and I bought her used. Has drain plugs so COLD weather has never be a prob BUT:
:colors: Last cold spell I didn't get all the water outta her:colors: , and the exhaust manifolds got cracked. No sweat, I fixed that, new gaskets etc. Changed oil, hooked up water supply fired her up, ran to temp shut er down. Checked oil level#-o
NO WAy, colored oil. Hooked up the drain pumper and pumped out the "Milky" oil.:monkey: :pale:
An "EXTRA" 3 quarts of the awfull looking stuff. Water in the oil pan. :shaking2:
The engine never ran rough or missed a beat, during warm up, smooth as always.
So I said, No prob we'll getter looked at and go from there. AND here is where reality stepped in:rambo:
Gotta put the tub on hold for a while. Roof (over 20 years old) has developed leaks, and Replacement of kitchen floor was already in the works. SO priorities take front seat.:salut: :salut:
No worries. the ole tub still is powered by the Kicker and a new MinnKota on front. so still in the game and not totally side lined. just have to readjust my attitude and technique. [-o<
Since it will be a while before the water temps warm around here I'm sure I can make it
without going into sever withdrawals.[-(

On the bright side, I'll be able to put more energey into the projects and get them finished before the fishing really heats up around here (not that it's dead by any means)o:)

Thanks guys for your concern, keep a look out for my fishing reports.

Loui,

Before you do a rebuild on a tired 14 year old engine look at getting a new "crate" motor or a crate rebuild. Short block IF your manifolds (intake & exhaust), carb, starter, etc are in good condition. A long block if all the stuff around the block is bad or failing. New is often less costly than a rebuild. Especially if you can't do the rebuild yourself. One good thing about I/O's is that they are a lot cheaper to rebuild or replace than an OB is.

Wolverine is right. Trying to rebuild a tired auto engine that has spent it's life pulling a grade at the same rpm makes for a poor choice. Hopefully you can find a marine long or short block in your area that is reasonably priced. Good Luck

WOW, Thanks Guys.
These are options to questions that have been chasing around in the ole squirrel cage.
Sweede, Going to a 350, would an upgrade from the present alpha one outdrive be in order?:money:
Hey ya Wolverine, been looking at the crated ones online. Some good looking deals available. haven't pursued it enough to compare online with what is instate yet.
Lookes like I've got some research to do Stampie, so many options.
keep the info flowing, it is appreciated.
by the time I get around to getting it fixed, I'll be "Well" informed. at least better informed:scratch:

I remember well the Blue Fin boat line. Made in Napanee Indiana. It was owned for a number of years by Bayliner but I believe that 14 years ago it was back to being an independent builder. Brunswick was the corporate parent and decided it didn't want to be in the alum boat biz. So they sold all their alum lines to anyone who wanted them at a cheap price. Of course about 5 years ago they got back in the alum biz by buying Lund, lowe, and Crestliner from Genmar.
As far as putting a 350 V-8 replacing the V-6 it would be pretty straight forward. Motor mounts on the stringers are probably in the same location. he floor and motor box will need to be modified as the V-8 is a set of cylinders longer + a set heavier. That boat wasn't designed for a V-8 so you may also have to move the built in gas tank forward. I probably wouldn't do it as more weight and probably another 10-15 mph on the top end will add stress to that rivited hull. There are no Coast Guard regs against replacing a 6 with an 8 as there are no upright and level flotation requirements on I/O's. Now insurance companies are another matter. They take a very dim view of putting a larger motor in than the factory did. In case of an accident, liability would be an issue. Your boat - your money - your call.

Hope you get all your projects done soon. I myself have to put in a floor and then fix a similar problem except in my truck as I blew the head gasket in it LOL.

Good advice Wolverine, thanks for your input, it is appreciated.
There was a day in my past where a modification would have been "cool" for me . Strip er down, modify anything and everything, stack-it, rack-it, bore-it, yea you get the picture. The boat has been, and is still very servicable for us. Hull integrity still intact,, no leaks, loose rivits, etc., supports strong, and gotta say, a comfortable layout for the style of fishing we do. More power, more speed, more ******** has it's place, but in this instance not necessary. When a replacement boat is purchased (somewhere in the Distant future), there will be some various differences we will be looking for. Will get serious about options when its torn down and see the damage.
All the in-put has been great, and is greatly appreciated. My thanks to all
Keep em coming.

Hey blufin loui,
You are "One stand up guy" Aces in my book. I don't know if I could even handle those kind of boat issues.
If it starts to get to much for you let me know and when the weather turns a little nicer, I'm sure I've got a couple of extra seats in my boat.
Thanks for all of your helpful information and comments.

Aw shucks BigD, that's mighty nice. Thanks for the flowers.
Someday we'll meet up on the water and get to swap hands on greetings.
By the time "other" issues get ironed out around here, I'll probably be in need of some Fishing therapy and will get serious on the boat fix. There just seems to be too little time to be able to Fish as much as one feels the need for. Hey, But things are gonna be looking up soon. Warmer weather coming (snowing right now), and new lake openings, so the fishing posts will be pouring in. Makes for some great "ArmChair" fishing.
Once again folks, A Big thank you for the comments and intrest.:salut:

 Thanks Everyone for the comments, suggestions, and invitations.
Finally got OLE Blue out of the shop. Got a fresh engine (same 4.3L size) and got it out on lake chelan for a run out today. Smooooth is all I got to say. Didn't realize how "off" the original engine was getting. Did about 50 + miles of breakin type running today and no issues came up. Had everything from mirrow flat surface to 2-3 ft rollers up lake.
It was spendy enough that I am still in a sweat, But am now ready to hit the water again.
Stay safe and good luck to all.
