prepping for king salmon on the sky help pls

Post by zefsidefishing » Wed Jul 11, 2012 11:54 pm

so i have never fished nor hooked into a king before, im very very very exited that they are gonna be open for catching, but like what kind of tackle do i use or line test? i have my spinning reel with 12 lb izor high viz 10 lb leader, and my conventional reel with 12 lb maxima and 10 lb izor leader, this is for steelhead/coho salmon rig, but should i just up my line to 15 lb mainline and 12 lb leader, and just drift fish with eggs, shrimp or, yarn, or corkies? and what colors work for them? pleease and thank you guys so much for all your help. really helps me out on the river. also is the mouth of the wallace the place to go? can you drift fish that area? or is it too low? -levi

you dont need to change anything. But upping the line will defiantly help land fish. I've caught kings on 8lb main and leader with #4 hooks, not the easiest thing but you can do it. As for what to use, the baits are going to be your best bet but the kings in the sky will hit anything at some point in time.

your tackle seems about right but maybe trying 15lb main and 12lb leader and bring eggs and drift fish them with a 1, 1/0 or 2/0. Also try throwing hardware like spoons and spinners. Springer gear will also catch steelhead so keep that in mind as well along with shrimp/egg cock tails are one of the best springer baits.

Last year I fished Pinks with light gear to learn how to use my drag on my reels. I caught a 25-30lb king on the green with 10lb main and 8 lb leader. with a number 4 hook it took a long long while to get him in but is doable. I got him in got my gear out of his or her mouth and released no issues.

but forsake of people around you 15 12 will do just fine also...

but I like Izor line just not the high vis line it doesn't hold up that well and stretches too much for my liking. but that is my opinion. Maxima is a great line and a tough line also. those are the 2 I like to use along with berkley line for my real light fishing needs.

but the 12 maxima will work you will just have to play the fish out more so than the 15lb line.

Slayer shouldnt have said what he said to the young guy wanting to learn how to catch fish, he shoulda probably just kept his mouth shut on that one. I got nothing against oneshot, or Z... but Thats what this site is for fishing, posting pics of your fish, so dont bash someone for posting pictures of fish.
If you dont like seeing his fish, then dont pay attention to his posts.
