Humminbird RF35 Fish Finder

So, today being Christmas and all, I got some great gifts. Now, somehow:^o, my dad knew that I liked fishing. His gift was a portable Humminbird RF35 fish finder. It has a watch and a little green sonar bobber that you cast out on a spare pole. You can reel it in or let it sit, and the bobber transmits the sonar signals of the bottom back to the watch. Supposedly, it will show you the bottom, structure, fish and all the rest. Very nice thought put into the gift.

My question is:

Has anyone used this before, and if you have, how did it work? Is it one of those infomercial products like the infamous bazooka rod?

This is the most advanced finder-watch combo of the RF series, so if any in the series are quality then this is too.

I was looking at that this last spring while researching a fish finder for a buddy of mine. The thought that came to mind is that it is a great tool to have when shore fishing. You can tell where the weeds are, at what depth and if fish are hanging in the area.
Manufactured by Hummingbird, I think that it will work pretty good. You should have fun using it. Let us know how it works.

Could come in handy for shore fishing, just watch the trees overhead. It will help in getting a general idea of the depth. Nice gift.

Really only useful for shore fishing...Make sure you tie a good knot to it....

Sorry, no can do. Already enough sibling rivalry around here.

I have one. It is a good tool. The picture on the box looks nothing like how it works. The simulator mode is close to it . Most of the fish appear on or close to the bottom . I don’t think they are.
Mine seems to lock up sometimes and I have nothing moving on the screen except a line across the top.

I had the Humminbird Smartcast RF10 series and it worked well for me for about 2 years until the transducer stopped working. I mostly used it to find depth and structure. You'll get some good use out of it. I wouldn't spend a ton of time paying attention to the fish on the screen. Use it more for finding quality fishing holes.

I have a buddy that has the RF15 (same as the RF10 I think) and it works OK. The cool thing about Humminbird's SmartCast series, if you stick with Humminbird, you can use the green transducer gizmos with other Humminbird fish finders (like the Matrix series) so you have two transducers. Bad thing is, the Transducers are a sealed unit, so if the battery dies, you have to buy a new one. I think that they can be had for like $25.

I'm thinking of getting the exact same one as you have for when I'm on the shore or on my pontoon.

Finally got to try it out for the first time at Green Lake. Works much better than I expected. Accurately marks water temperature, depth.

Nope. I was about 13 feet deep right near the boat launch (I just tossed it out there on a short line, didn't cast it).

I pick-up a Smartcast for my matrix 17 i wish this white stuff would go away so i can go try it out
