To add to the bees nest thing...

I don't know if this is legal or not but anyway... My dad thought of the idea to tie a piece of ham on a low hanging tree branch to attract bees/bugs. (This was on fish lake in Eastern Wash) We waited a day and went back to it. Bees did come but there wasn't really any fish that found it. We were trying to get it low enough so when the bees took off their wings would hit the water and they would get stuck in the water. Kind of like the soapy water trick at a campsite. Didn't work as planned but was very fun and interesting.

My uncle said that he did this with a dead possum he found on the road. After a few days it got maggots that would fall into the water. But my uncle does like to tell stories...

That exact same story is retold in this month's Field and Stream magazine, in their article about bluegills and sunfish in the south

Yes, same lake. Although when I trolled it, it was in September. But my buddy who showed it to me said that he hit it in February of '08 and it was still good. I fly-fished it with a #2 olive wooly bugger and had good luck on bigger fish. My buddy used a chartreuse wedding ring with a worm on the end and he did good but with smaller fish.

I also fished the shoreline where there are some low hanging trees. I used a blue/silver baitcaster and did well on smallmouth.

Interestingly there was also a large bees nest at the far end of the lake on a low hanging tree. Thanks to my dad I had some bee patterns in my fly arsenal and was very successful on all fish. This was quite rare as I have never heard of anyone else who this has happened to. Once in a lifetime type of thing I guess.

When trolling, I was using a sinking line which brought me down to about 15 feet. I had pretty consistent hits at that depth, but really started hitting them when I put a pinch weight on the end of my line. I don't know what the depth was but it really worked. I am assuming that brought me down another 5-8 feet.
Thanks Rabbits! To me, it sounds like "Long Lake" is deeper than I thought. If you were down 15 feet and then another 5-8 feet that would put the bottom at around 20-25 deep? Is that about right? I was informed by various sources that said this lake is/was/very shallow. I'll have to look again and see. Thank you for your insight here Rabbits, it is very much appreciated to an angler like me who is use to fishing open water. I do have a Drake Fly-Rod and nice little reel to boot, and a ton of quality flies. I think I will try this lake out coming up here in mid-March. I'd just like to know if anyone does know, how deep "Long-Lake" is...I know it's not that deep and it is surrounded by brush/trees on one side and homes on the other. How did you fish it when it was all covered in lily-pad, however. In September I went back there and there were lilies all over the whole lake (covering the whole darn lake) - just curious how you were able to fish with all the pads there. Have you fished the other lake at the far end of Beaver Lake by the rock that is the deeper of the two smaller lakes? I'm going to hit this lake up in my raft (Long Lake) and I think I'll troll chronmomids and buggers. We'll see...

Long Lake is also called "Beaver Lake Pond" - here is what I could find on the internet:

Beautiful Long Lake has much to offer visitors. This lake is so wonderful. Stay the night at Tall Chief Resort; if you need a place to stay Oakwood Redmond is a perfect choice. High temperatures at Long Lake during the months of summer are in the 70's. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 50's. Throughout the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 30's for Long Lake. The amount of rainfall that falls at Long Lake is close to
the national average; December is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month of the year is July.
Cedar River is a great whitewater spot close to Long Lake, and golf can be played at Carnation Golf Course & Driving Range. Just can't get enough of Long Lake. Here at Long Lake there are plenty of people from Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue. Issaquah Village RV Park is a tremendous campground here, and after a long day outdoors Holiday Inn Seattle-Issaquah, Wa
is a good location to spend a night or two.
You can run the rapids of Raging River in the neighborhood of Long Lake, and while you're here, you could also check out scenic Allen Lake.

----------------------

I can't get a definitive answer to my question if Long Lake is a good lake to fish or if the other larger lake connected to Beaver is the way to go -- I guess we'll try both of them and see what's going on. Maybe Sam knows how deep Long Lake or "Beaver Lake Pond" truly is? Maybe not? I'm not sure. All I know is I saw lily pads over the whole lake in late September so I'm not sure if Long Lake is any deeper than perhaps 15.' To me, it only looks around 10-15 feet deep: http://www.fishingworks.com/lakes/washi ... ver-lakes/

I would surmise that this lake holds fish and can be fished right now. If we don't catch fish in Beaver Lake Pond or Long Lake, then we can hit up that other larger and deeper lake at the far end of the original Beaver Lake. There are 3 lakes here so it does get confusing to the average layman who doesn't fish it all that much to begin with.

I have no idea how deep it is. I wouldn't imagine that deep. The lake is covered in lily pads in the summer...
