Looking for Lk Lenore tips

Post by joecaffe » Sun Sep 14, 2008 9:07 pm

I will be fishing Lake Lenore for a day or two in early Oct. Anybody have some advice? Put-in for pontoon boat? Patterns? Line & depth?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site, Joe:cheers:

Lenore is a great lake to fish. I'll be heading over there in a few weeks myself. The Lehontons grow to good size and put a good bend in your rod. Over the years I have fished it many times. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind while fishing the lake:

>WATCH THE WEATHER- Lenore can be a very rough lake if the wind comes up. I have had white caps go over the back of my float tube. The wind can come up fast and gusts can get high. If wind is forecasted, don't stray too far from your launch area. It could be very difficult getting back up the lake into the wind.

>Snakes- Since it is a desert lake, it is snake country. Although most of the rattlers will be denned up by Oct., there may be a couple still out if the weather remains warm. Watch where you step.

>Depth- It is not a very deep lake. It is about 15-20 feet deep in most areas. The south end is fairly shallow and has quite a bit of weeds. Chironomids are good to use in that area.

>Launch areas- There are several places to put in. If you are using a pontoon boat, the southern end of the lake would be best. There is one area about 3/4 up the lake where you can put in a pontoon boat also. I usually put my pontoon boat in at the main launch or the launch down on the south end across from the large island.

>Lines- Depending on how deep the fish are lying and the wind, either a sink tip or full sink will work fine. If using chironomids, floating will work great and adjust depth with leader and tippet length. I use 3X leader and tippet. Although the Lehontons are not a jumping or running fish, they are quite strong and do give a good tug. I would suggest a 5-6wt. rod.

>Patterns- Green over the years has been productive for me. Last year I was using an Olive Carey with a red bead head. Anything with peacock like a Zug Bug will also work. An olive leech will most likely get results also.

Hope you have a great time. Let us know how you did and be sure to remember to write up a fishing report.
