What Flies?

Post by Lotech Joe » Sun Sep 21, 2008 10:40 am

This long overdue rain has got me thinking about what flies I'll be tying this winter. I'm going to be building some bucktail royal coachmen, PMD's and BWO's. I have enough caddis patterns to last a lot of years. And, I'm going to finally build my bugger barn the way I want it. How about you? What patterns are you considering for the long winter ahead?

Oh, and I plan on building at least one more rod.

I am going to put some spinners together. I also want to put hair on some rooster tails I am refurbishing. If I feel bold I might try some woolly buggers.
I now know why we do it in the winter. No time if your fishing at all.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Winter is a nice time to get out and enjoy the crisp air, snow covered stream sides and knowing that you will be alone with nature. It is good time to use those Muddlers and Nymphs that sit in the box and wait for their turn. You know you tied them for something. They are real buggy looking and winter is the time to get them wet. Since I got hurt I haven't been able to get out in streams to fly fish. It is something I truely miss. Good luck to you, Steve

Fly Fishing is the art of attaching a fake bug to a line and relying on the appropriate manipulation of the rod to deceive the fish into eating a sharp steel hook covered with feathers and fur.

Since I live on the "wet" side of the hill and fish the salt a lot I'm going to be tying Comets, Miawaki poppers, Clousers, Knudson spiders, and Handlebars. I bought the book; Fly-Fishing for Pacific Salmon II and its full of great recipes for proven flies. I went on a tying binge 5-6 years ago and my boxes have a lot of empty spaces that need filling.

Sweet! Leeches for sure. Lil nymphs like pt's are always a mainstay. Winter is still a ways away. :-"
