Any of you locals fishing the Spokane yet? How's she shaping up? My partner will be back in town next week and we're itching to fish some moving water!

Have not hit the water yet, but have seen others on it. Normally I hit it around the first of June when the upper part opens to C&R and the Caddis flies are popping off. This year, with the late run off, the Caddis are done before the water became fishable.

Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

OK, maybe not done, but they don't cloud the air when I drive to Cabelas right now.fish4brains wrote:I hope more people believe that, more river for meAnglinarcher wrote: the Caddis are done .

RE:Spokane River
OK, I've fished it a couple times since my original post. She's not in prime condition yet, but is rapidly coming around. Got a half dozen rainbows on my first trip along with a few whitefish and squawfish and got a couple bows on the second. Caddis pupae and soft hackle PTs worked just fine for me.
The trout seem to be dispersed, probably because the river is still trying to gain it's usual definition. None of the holes where I got trout yielded more than one. This will change once the fish begin podding up in the deeper holes as the summer progresses.
These lakes around here are awesome, but thank goodness for moving water! It's at this time of year where I regain my casting, mending and drifting skills. Just watch your step when you go...she's a bear to wade and every step is an adventure!

Ya, I thought about taking my pontoon out on the upper river tomorrow night. It looks like the river is still a little high, but who knows.
I may just stick to the shore - hope I can find the time.

I just returned from fishing the upper section of the river. I floated it from State Line to around Barker Rd.
The fishing was pretty good with about 15 fish trout between two of us. The river is still a little high, especially for this time of year. The caddis hatch was somewhat subdued this afternoon. Most fish were taken with a bead head PT nymph and Czech Nymphs. I caught a couple larger fish (16" or so) on a mini-bugger in black.
I will be out there again this week I hope.

I know they have started working on the Barker bridge, but I'm wondering if they have started demolition. Anyone know? Once they start, I doubt we'll be able to use Barker as a haul out.
Where you go is less important than how you get there.

I've fished the upper river 7 of the last 8 days for 2-3 hours each trip. The runoff has changed the river some what, but it is starting to fish very well. I've caught fish on BH Hare's Ears, Caddis Pupa, Serendipity's, soft hackles, and Seal Buggers. This time last year small soft hackles were fishing very well, and for 4 or 5 weeks tha 's what I caught almost all my fish on. I have not seen that YET this year, but believe we are close to seeing that happen. This morning I was on the river at 5:15 and had my best action yet all on Caddis Pupa fished in the film. Lots of working fish to cast to.
Not sure on the Barker bridge, but will try to check it out in the next couple days, Joe.

Joe... no demolition yet. I bet they keep the parking lot on the south side open if you can find a place to take out.
