Guides and Poor Sportsmanship

Post by Bodofish » Sat Nov 13, 2010 7:33 pm

I was out with a buddy playing on the Sky and saw some really disturbing behavior, it was up on the flats today. I could see a number of Coho digging nests and flopping around. Thought wow cool... walked down along the shore to take a look and sure enough they were laying down in the nests work'in on gettin busy. A number of fish were still digging and jumping. As I walked away a guide from a fishing and marine store in Woodinville and not downtown, came around the corner saw the fish thrashing and digging and jammed his big sled right in on top or the spawners. Everyone disembarked from the sled and took up positions along the bank trying to catch the spawning fish that were 5 to 10 feet in front of them. It made me sick. I don't really know what else to say and that's really something for me.

As much as I would hate to say it maybe it is worth listing the name of the guide service so others will avoid doing business with them. Targeting salmon on redds is downright deplorable behavior and it happens way more often than it should.

Maybe you should have hollered at him/them that it was unsportsmanship to do that.

Drop them a note telling them what you think of the "guides" sporting tactics.

www.3riversmarine.com

Pretty hard for them to claim it wasn't one of their guides when the names all over the boat.

It's rough out there as far as finding fish. He had folks on the boat that paid waaaay too much to be fishing in this skimpy run I'm sure, and probably was desperate to get fish on. But if I had a boat, and the ability to hit all the good holes for fish, casting at spawning fish would be the last thing I would do. I still don't do it, and I've got 13 silvers this season. Bright fish, not all spawned out ones. It's just not polite. :(

You are right. 3 Rivers Marine is a marine / tackle store, not a guide outfit. I'm guessing that the guides get a discount on tackle/equip if they have the 3RM logo on their boat (or something like that). BUT, it won't hurt telling them what you saw. Bodo, go there and talk to the guys. From my interaction with them I think they would disapprove of the actions of the guide.

Maybe it'd be a good idea to get the guides business card next time. You know, ham it up and say that you've got someone coming to town etc.

I went to their website and they advertise a lot of guides from all over. IMO I think what happens is the Guides get a discount from 3rivers for advertising on the boat. Sponsors maybe?
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

All true and they round up clients for them too.
