Sturgeon

Post by FishBaitThe2nd » Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:10 pm

Well, I wanna go sturgeon fishing. I think I know how and what to use.
But I have no idea where to go. Any tips, I don't want to go really far. 2 and a half hours from Belfair?
I know theres the union 2 miles away from me, but sturgeon aren't as plentiful there as they once were. I don't want to keep any, just want to say ive caught one. Any tips in the right direction would be great. And by the way, I know in most places its not open right now im preparing for future fishing trips [biggrin]

From Belfair, I'd say bite the bullet and head to the big C. You can find people bank fishing for them there. I don't really know of anywhere else there's bank fishing for them, well maybe the Snake too. Big rod, long cast! Good Luck!!

The chehalis around cosmopolis, and friends landing in montesano are both good bets. They put in a new dock at friends landing, and it's pretty cool. Sand shrimp or anchovies, plunk 'em and wait. remember to get sturgeon leaders, they have whiskers, and won't bite if they feel the mono.

I havent been sturgeon fishing in several years. We mostly fished the lower Columbia around Astoria, buoy 10 etc. Biggest ones we caught there were in the 60" range. We did fish just below the Bonneville dam a few times for the bigs ones. Caught on 7 ft and one just a hair over 9ft.

All caught on braid with sliding sinker rigs.

We used sand shrimp and anchovies most of the time. IIRC, we used big shad - 12" to 14"? - up by the dam to catch the big ones. Its been a few years since we have been down there though.

We actually enjoyed catching the smaller ones down river better than the giants. The giants made a couple of runs but were mostly just like pulling in a big log. Lots of work. I think it took me about 20 minutes for the 7 footer and maybe 30 for the 9 footer.

The 3' to 4 footers on the other hand like to strip line multiple times and do some impressive jumping :D

I wasn't a big fan of anchoring in the river though. Lots of trouble, hard work and potential risk when in a crowded spot!
