Post by Bassin253 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 4:14 pm

So what does everyone think is going to happen on the green river with the dam? I work in tukwila about 100yards from the river by Costco. Its about a 50-50 split on people i talk to some say its not if but when and others say there just covering there butts by spending all this money before hand and they doubt if anything will happen. whats your take?

I used to work there at that Cosco, Making their gatoraid product, roasting coffee and packaging the popcorn carmel stuff in the back. Anyway...

Im in S Auburn about a mile fron the White River. The forcast maps and all indications Ive seen say I should be fine, assuming they dont screw up and dump to much from Tapps again. But Im not taking to many chances. Were getting the homeowners insurance up to date and rolling our policys togeather (just got married) and I bought the flood insurance. If things get as bad as they say, worst case, we already have arangements with family up on the hill.

Kent will have some flooding, it does every year. I expect Auburn will see some in places. If it rains enough to refill Tapps, Im going fishing... then bugging out before they dump it all into the valley.#-o

So if this big flood does happen, wont that wreck all the spawning beds, especially those of all the pinks that filled the river? Maybe it will be like the Skokhomish by Potlatch, all the chum swimming over the road. I work by Ikea and we have made plans but havent sandbagged our bldg. Though about parking my boat by work just in case i cant get back across the valley to Seatac. lol

You know people, you ahve to understand that IF the river does flood, it may not be this year...The wrok being done on the Howard Johnson Dam I think could take up to 4-5 years, and they will have to let water out a little more and more as they work on it. It's the water they are letting out plus the usual percentage a rainfall/snow melt we usually get that can cause the flooding. It is all precautionary, and last year we saw some good flooding. We might as well be prepared as best as we can. I'm happy there is a proactive step BEFORE things happen rather than while it happening or ever after its too late. But this flooding may not happen this year, but it COULD happen over the duration of the repairs that are taking place.

South Auburn south of Hwy 18 will be fine and not effected by Howard Hanson.... Now if Mud Mountain Dam has problems then look out. My pops place is right where the old White river bed ran through before they diked it in Auburn.
Kent will be screwed. With all this levee work and extra sandbags that have been placed, the whole flood scenario will change. More water will now be directed into other areas. I'm glad to hear that the Corp has changed there flood probability from 1 in 4 to 1 in 25 this winter though.

How about those salmon runs. Like the Puyallup last year I think we are going to see the effect in about four years.. but who really knows, I'm getting my boat ready :)
I like it when I can call it Catching!
