Shooting a shotgun loaded with slugs is a punishing affair, even a 20ga. Your friend will shoot it once and then flinch miss every other time he shoots. Slugs are for experienced shooters only, that don't mind a good buck. Much best to stick with .223 or 7.62. Pick up a cheap SKS and scope it. Wipe out the Coyotes. If you were in EW I'd say a much longer range round but on this side you'll never shoot over 100 yrds. If you can muster a night vision scope even better, they think they're invisible in the dark.
Build a man a fire and he's warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he's warm the rest of his life!

If your friend want to become a good shot and he has the room, every day go out and shoot three rounds at a designated target, I like the steel windmill types. After a few weeks he'll be able to shoot the nads off a nat.
