Blaze Orange

Post by racfish » Mon Oct 29, 2012 1:32 pm

I see hunters alot of the time wearing all camo clothing yet they wear a blaze orange vest or jacket or hat even. I know its to keep yourself from getting shot. What good is it to wear camo ifin you wear an orange jacket? Do deer or elk see orange as we do I wonder?

I've read/heard that deer can't see the orange. I guess the camo pants is so people don't where denum as the deer might be able to see that against the trees and bushes, and thus the human outline. So why not wear ALL orange? [laugh]

Apparently deer and elk see mainly in shades of grey. If you break up the solid orange color (camo) then they have a harder time seeing you. Only works if you're standing still. If you're moving, then it doesn't matter what you're wearing. I hunt with a guy who wears solid orange and he gets closer to the animals more often than the rest of us. As the saying goes....clothes don't make the man. :pirat:

The requirement is that you need to have 400 square inches of blaze orange on your person and it needs to be visible from 360 degrees. Large blotches of any color tend to stand out to animals so what you'll find is that folks either use a few smaller swatches to make up the necessary requirement or they use a camo pattern with the blaze orange color in it. I've found that as long as you remain still you are invisible, so the color isn't that big of an issue to still hunters. If you are stalking an animal, one can arrange their blaze orange so that you expose as little of it towards the direction of the animal as possible.

i have worn orange during hunting season on the satsop since some dumbass started shooting in random locations from up on a hill and apparently couldn't see us till we started firing. he got his junk blaser stuck while trying to get the hell out of there.

I would guess more than breaking up the outline the camo gear under the vest probably has some form of sent control and or the only outdoor clothing the hunters has or chooses to wear for the day. I could see the camo making difference if the vest had a pattern of blazes and shades.

I, simply, where camo under my orange because that is what I have for hunting clothes. I am an archer, for the most part who bought the multi-season deer tag. To buy new hunting clothes for the wife and I so we will not be wearing camo under our orange would not really make a bit of sense.

Pretty much what I was thinking.

Thanks everyone. I was just curious. I know when Im fishing in remote areas I wear bright colors. Just for that reason. Steelheading /salmon fishing in the rivers are at the same time as hunting season.

i believe I read that orange more than any other color seems to blend the best for deer, and coincidentally stands out the best for human eyes. I will see if I can find the article.

I wear a broken pattern orange... basically camo pattern on orange material. I figure its the best of both worlds.

Go into a sporting goods store and check out the rain gear. It's camo. I don't care if my clothes are camo. It just so happens that most of the hunting clothing out there is camo.

Im looking forward to bear hunting this comming season. I like the idea of blaze orange now even more then before. I know too many knucleheads that hunt while drinking. I wont hunt with those kinds of hunters. To me drinking (or drugs) dont mix well with high powered rifles.

no argument. I know a lot of people I dont trust sober around guns. there's no way I'm sticking around to see what they're like intoxicated.

Bear season is never great for me, but considering Turkey here in a couple weeks.

more than anything I just need to get on the water. :-({|=

I did some work with the fish and game in idaho. I wore camo orange on a game trail with sent block and almost got ran over by a deer. That was until I moved out of the way. They dont see in color but shades of gray as stated before. You need to have some sort of brake up pattern to blend in. Alot of people get buck fever and shoot at noises in the brush. It all started as I doubted blaze orange camo to some friends that worked for the fish and game. Hope that helps.
