Dick Nite 50/50

Post by returnofthefish » Wed Apr 21, 2010 7:10 pm

I saw some today at the store and remembered it was impossible to find them during the pink salmon season last year. I was going to buy some, but I dont know how to use them. Can they be trolled from a float tube? How do you anglers use it and what kind of fish do they catch?

John, You don't want to troll anything from a float tube.
They have no weight to them to use them to cast..... but, you could put a sinker above a swivel, then run about 18" of leader down to the DickNite, and cast and retrieve that. The sinker would allow you to cast it. Most people use them though when trolling from a boat, or on a river with a pencil lead set up.

The Quad is correct. I troll a Dik/nite behind my pop gear or even a flasher. The other way is in the rivers with pencil lead. Go to their website. They have tie up pics there.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

This time of year a small split shot or two a couple of feet up from the lure is all you need for trolling these things. As quad mentioned they are too light to be cast without some kind of additional weight. You can use a casting bubble if you prefer to stay close to the surface. Around here Dick Nights are typically used to catch trout, kokes and pinks but will also work for shad and surf perch. Smear on a bit of bait oil and panfish will take them as well. They are a spoon and you can catch nearly anything on a spoon if the presentation is good.

In the summer I've had great success trolling them in Alder lake 24-36" behind a 2oz banana weight. Those things and wedding rings are great for kokanee.

i've used them off bill's boat house with a cpl maggots or a berkley trout nibble and lightly jigged them around the slips with an ice fishing rod. Caught some nice 'bows doin that when the bite was slow. Pretty sure that'd work out in a tube, it just takes a lil while to get it down and get used to flipping it out a lil was.
