A9 Reports???

Post by BARCHASER10 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 10:52 pm

Any A9 Chinook reports? I'll try it out this week. No A9 reports in the reports section.

I went over to Sekiu last week and filed the following report.

Took my son in law over to Sekiu this week. First time he has ever been salmon fishing. But it didnt take long and he handled the downriggers, rods, net etc like he has been doing it 30 years. Started Monday afternoon and came back on Thursday. We targeted Chinooks, got 6 of which 3 were wild and 3 were hatchery. We kept the hatchery fish 24, 18 and 12. The Chinook bite kind of died, so we went out into the Strait now and then, gobs of Pinks, one every 10 minutes or so. Also caught 14-15 Silvers of which only one was a hatchery fish.

Total score, 3 Nooks, one Silver and I did keep 5 Pinks even though I'm not a big fan of eating Pinks. Hot Spot and Coho Killers in Cop Car and Cookies n' Cream.

For you Pink lovers, there are gobs of them coming.

Just posted a report for Lagoon Pt. from Sat. evening. Targeted Kings with 2/3 rods. No hits. Only had some hits on the shallow gear and boated one Pink.

It's been a hit/miss season for most folks it seems. The fish seem to be spread out, fishing will pick up for a few days and then it just turns off and fish are gone. This morning at Pnpoint was very slow, nothing really on the radio but we got a few nice ones a few days ago from the same spot.

It's still worth giving it a go. Tides for the next few days are looking better and there's still fish out there. Of the 20 or so kings I've boat this year only one has been under 10 lbs.

Thanks A9. Sounds about like it is every year. I'm sure there are some around, you just have to get it in front of their nose. What have you been using, flashers or Tomics?

Basically the three consistent spots for me this season have been Pilot Point to Pt n Pt, Norwegian Pt to Skunk Bay, and the Tin Shed off the SW corner of the bar. The pilot-no point troll has been the most consistent in putting out high digit days (4+ hookups), although the Tin Shed is always good for 1 or 2 fish if you put in the hours and can find bait. We have found fish to be pretty deep this year in many cases as well, lots of hookups with 150-190 feet of cable out.

Best rigs have been Cookies N Cream and recently Irish Cream spoons behind flashers, trolled cut-plug herring, White/UV Squid w/ redrum flasher, Light Green UV Ace-hi; Listed in the order of effectiveness for us.

Last year was GREAT fishing in Area 9. I had about 30 or so utings last summer for area 9/10 chinook and only got skunked a handful of times. Many days of limits.

Never really fish plugs that much for whatever reason. I run spoons and Ace Hi's behind flashers..... Coyote's in green glow, silver horde kingfisher irish cream or cookies and cream in 3.5 or 4 inch, green spatterback ace hi's or purple haze ace hi's and a few coho killers here and there. . About all I've ran this year. Green glow, jelly crush, red racer, purple haze UV or green UV haze hotspots.

Thanks Matt. Cookies n Cream and Irish Cream on which spoon? Coyote? Coho Killer? Silver Horde? I assume Pilot Pt is on the incoming tide?

On the Silver Horde Kingfisher...

Those spoons are their tailwagger model, which I'm not sure if theyre any better than a regular spoon, but that gives you the idea of what they are. You can also get any of those spoons without the mini squid off the rear hook. ...

Correct, the PnP to Pilot Point (or further south) troll is usually fished on an incoming, go north of PnP during an outgoing....

Just south of point no point put out two low teen clipped kings for us this morning. 90 feet and 100 feet of cable in 110-140 feet of water. Ace hi flys and an Irish cream silver horde spoon. Saw a few nets out too

Thank you. When I was out on Wednesday, I wanted to try it between pnp and Pilot Pt but the AM tide was wrong (outgoing). Maybe next time. I talked to Matt in the WDFW Research Boat and fished by him for awhile on the west side. They werent doing much either. I did try the Silver Horde spoon in Irish Cream and I've used Ace Hi flys for a few years. I ran a Tomic for awhile too. Very little bait on the screen. There were a lot of guys clustered north of the Skagit buoy, and I tried that for a bit too. I have some relatives visiting, but I'll be out on Monday or Tuesday, maybe both.

Still not time to give up on the kings. Had some good action this morning off pilot point this morning, 2 nice wild fish released and lost another boatside that was also sporting an adipose. Old standby green/glow spoon and green spatterback ace hi's down 100-120 of cable

The bite was on today. PnP south to pilot point on the morning incoming was good to us. Lines in @ 6:30 fished till 10:30 am. First fish surprised us by grabbing our gear as we were sending it back down after checking it. 12 lb hooknose coho. From there we boated two hatchery kings, 14 and 18 lbs, lost a silver after going airborne and a king that came unbuttoned after a strong run down to the bottom... Saw a few other kings and silvers taken and a few humpies.

All fish taken on a green ace hi... Shorter leaders, bout 28" inches

King fishing off Pilot was downright ONFIRE the last few days. Friday we went 5/7 from 6:00am - 10:00am all on either an irish cream spoon or a 3" bucktail fly, white. There is a TON of juvenile herring over there about 2.5-4" in length right now, use either a Kingfisher light spoon, a 3" bucktail, or a coho killer and you will be in fish. Might also consider using a small Tomic plug in the 3.5" size. Fish seem to be suspended in shallower water feeding on that bait, fishing in 100-150 feet of water with gear down 75-90 feet seems to be most effective.

OK, OK, you guys convinced me. I'm taking a buddy and his 10 yo grandson out tomorrow. His grandson has never caught a salmon so I was going to go up in the tidewtr Sno for some easy Pinks. But with only one week left on Nooks, Pilot Pt here I come. Got my Irish Cream, Cookie and Cream Coho Killers, Ace High Flys, Tomics (5"and6"), you name it, I got it. Incoming tide all morning so Pilot Pt should produce??!!

18' North River Seahawk, blue trim, that be us.

Incoming tide = fish from Point No Point down south to Pilot Point (just a few houses on the beach)

If your itchin to get into some pinks, send some pink gear 30-60 feet down. Theres lots of them out there....Keep an eye out for silvers, we found a few of those lately too.

If you have a chartplotter/gps you should be able to see the bottom contour running from PnP to Pilot Point.. Follow the edge of the shelf, 90-150 feet of water. I like to zig zag along that outer edge, and occasionally out off of it into 150+ feet of water until I find where the bait and fish are holding. Sunday morning we got most of ours on the deep end of the shelf in like 140-150 feet but that changes every day.... Some guys like trolling northward into the incoming, I prefer going with tide, but we did catch one and saw a few caught by going into the tide the other day when we hit a cold streak going with the tide so who knows...

Ace Hi fly in green spatterback or green/glow spoons worked for us.... Good luck out there and let us know how you fair. Will be out Friday-Sunday giving it one last go for kings....Like Matt said, some fish are suspended in that 60-90 range but don't be afraid to go deep. We have caught some fish with 110-130+ feet of cable out there...

I fished it pretty much like you said. Three of us got there at 6:45 just after tide change, nailed a 12 pound hatchery Nook 15 minutes later on a Silver Horde Irish Cream spoon. Tried Ace Hi flys too. Fish and bait on the screen, but no other action. Tried varous depths but the bait and fish seemed to disappear off the screen around 8:30. Talked to 4-5 other boats around Pilot Pt, but nobody else had fish. Sure thought we would hit it big when we first got there.

Moved over to westside Possession about 10:30. Got into a Pink bite, down deep 90 feet, and with Chinook gear not Pink stuff and got 7. Moved over to the Shipwreck around noon, got two more Pinks. My buddies 10 yo grandson caught his first salmon, so it was a good day.

The purse seiners are hitting the Pinks hard, just north of Mulkiteo. There were 8 there when we went out around 6 and all 8 were still there when we came back. Watched them for awhile and they were loading up the nets big time. Pinks going up the Sno may be thin for awhile until the purse seiners move elsewhere.

You should be happy with your day today. Another member here who I know had a tough time finding the pinks today and said Humpy Hollow was slooowwwwww. Also had a friend out on the water on Possession who had one fish for a mornings worth of effort.

If your out Friday I'll keep an eye out. Will be out but probably on north side of point to start the morning cause of the outgoing then around the tide change ( I think around 9am ish) switch to the south and fish down thru Pilot Point when the tide starts flooding....

Fished west Possession today right off the Skatchet Head Buoy and the pinks are in there so damn thick you can barely get gear down. We caught a ton from 90 feet all the way down to 190 feet of cable. Fish porpoising and jumping everywhere. That's the spot to be right now for pinks FOR SURE, shipwreck reports sounded slow today. Also caught a 25+ pig on a 600 series tomic plug in 220 ft water with 195 cable out in that area.

Fished Pilot on the incoming until just after the afternoon high, not a strike other than shakers. Hitting Norwegian or Pilot first thing in the AM tomorrow.
