ALBACORE!!!!!!

Just booked a spot on a charter boat for Albacore Tuna fishing out of Westport.

1 1/2 days. Run out to the Tuna grounds during the night and then fish all day ( no limit ) then run back in the next evening.
I have been Tuna fishing before and it is one of my favorite fish to catch. There is nothing like a 15# torpedo hitting a live Anchovy doing 35 mph.
Hoping to get some bloody fish pictures to post and maybe a few pics of fishermen chumming.

Nice work northfork.....i hope you have a blast!! A friend of mine keeps saying he wants to hit a tuna charter. I would love to go, but i have this "thing" about charters. In this situation i could make an exception though, only because i don't have the boat to get to tuna waters. when are you going?? when you went last time, how much luck did you have ( lbs. of fish brought home)?? I have heard tuna are one of the best fights on the planet....what do you think?? I may end up doing this with a friend, i just need some "big fish" stories to get me excited.....

whats the average size fish caught on the charters? are they typically in the 15lb range? I heard they came this far north but I must admit to being spoiled having lived in san diego for so long and doing mexican charters frequently.

Rollin with Rolland. The trip is set for Aug 20th. There was only 1 spot left on this trip, most of August is already booked solid for ALL the boats.
Last time I went ( 3 years ago ) I exchanged the whole fish for canned fish at the cannery. Ended up with 2 cases ( 24 cans ) each of regular and smoked Tuna. Never have bought regular tuna fish in the store since.
Ended up with 6 fish averaging 15# each. There were 10 of us on the charter. That's 60 fish in 6 hours of fishing.
My groin was black and blue for a week from wedging the pole in to get leverage to fight the fish. This time I'm taking a fighting belt to cut down on the bruising. Pumped Yet??

big fish lite line- The boats troll at about 6 knots with jigs until they locate the school, then they shut down and start pitching live anchovy with no weight. It is normal to have 5-6 fish on at a time when using bait. Usually the boat will pull in 10-15 tuna before the school sounds and you start looking for another school.

gian- The fish up here will go as big 30# but the norm is 15-20. We are spoiled up here too, just not that many fishermen have found this awesome fishing yet, although it gets tougher every year to find a open spot on the boats.

Hey North,..souds like a cool trip ahead,..I always wanted to go on a Charter for Tuna,..my son has been out with his Uncle in Cali/San Pedro and they hooked some nice Yellowtail too,..the Tuna get GINORMOUS down south and I'm gonna try and steal a pic from him and post it,..have a good time sounds like a blast! BB

GJorgy- Depends on how you rationalize it. Cost $535 for trip, you supply the food and beverages. Gas to get to Westport.
I usually travel for 5 days of fishing and burn that much in fuel and food and catch some decent trout.
You can check it out @ OceanCharters online. I booked with the Ranger only because of word of mouth.
