My friend and I want to try to take the boat out and get some crab.
we will be using rings and coming through the locks.
Where is the closest place to go give this a shot? Also.. how deep is it. I need to get enough rope.
If you have any ideas of close piers or areas to do this from the shore that would be helpful too.
This is all new to me. We got our licenses and are ready to go.
Thanks for the help!

You can use your rings from the A-dock at Shilshoe marina. If you are talking about going through the locks and crabbing from a boat, I wouldn't recommend using rings, but if that is all you got, what the heck. With rings you will have to pull them up much more often because the crab will be snackin' and then just move off the ring. If you had a pot, of course they would be contained until you pull it.
Don't go with anything less than 100' of line. I usually drop pots in about 80' of water, and then you have to consider which direction the tide is going, in order to account for excess line beyond the original depth that you dropped at. Also be sure and use a clamp on weight to your line so that you don't leave floating line on the surface. People can tangle their props in that, and that wouldn't be good. (plus if your doing it all right and legal... you will have your ID on the buoy-- if you tangle in someone's prop)
If you are going through the locks, you could go North of Shilshoe, just around the first point, and then out to about 80'. Last year I did well out there, but the one time out this year was not too good. I am hoping that it was just do to the extreme tides that we've had. Too fast.
Good luck

Thanks Quad -
I grabbed a Pot and have plenty of line.
we will probably just float where we throw down the pot and ring.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Just curious... Is the Adock that public pier by the little ice cream shop just south of golden gardens or is it a dock in the marina.
