Northwest Fishing Reports

well me and the family are heading out for westport in the morning. gonna get some clams, hopfully some fish, and maybe some crab. gonna be fishin off the jetties for the next 2 days. we usually do well off any one of the jettys, and bring home anywhere from 10-15 lbs of fillets, perch, greenling,rockfish, sometimes i'm lucky enough to get a cabezon. limits of clam<cockles & horse clams> and a few crab. will post pix when we get back have a good weekend everyone i know i will :bounce:

good luck christopherbeebe, I've never been but I hear good things!! I'll be up fishing one of the most remote mountain lakes i can get to....looks like we both have a good fishing weekend in store!!

Have a great and wonderful time with the family.Travel safe and we want to see some pictures when y'all return.I was just there doing a job on Monday.Stop and pick up some smoked oysters at Blue Pacific Oyster Co. They have great smoked ones.Crab cocktails at Bradys Oysters are good too.

Be sure to make a report in the alpine lakes section on your hike.

i have returned from our trip to the ocean had a great time lots of fun lots of fish. we caught dungeness crab, red rock crab, 7 greenling, 4 black rockfish, i was lucky enough to even get a decent cabezon. i even got a lingcod it was only about 10 inches. . no perch this trip, my wife caught a huge eel looking thing i believe it was a giant gunnel it was at least 22 inches long. i have pix will post up soon but i have alot of fish to fillet so i'll be back later. ttyl

Chris, Where did you say you fished from again? Jetties at Westport, or the jetty way down at the end of Ocean shores?

that my friend.. i did not know either, till i got home and compared pix to my books it is a very very large rock prickleback. we let it go though probly a world record if there is a world record set. don't think there is though

Those finger jetties are my favorites at Westport.

That's a nice eel too. Never seen one of those caught before.

I'm headed there in October.

What sort of tackle do you use to fish the jetties at Westport? What size of line #? I may have a chance to go there and appreciate any info. Thanks

for bait fishing i use basicaly a drop shot set up with a 1oz sinker on the bottom then 8-10 inches above the the weight i tie a Snelled #4 bait holder hook or a #2 salmon/steelhead hook & i use 20 lb test only cause of the the many rocks u will encounter out there the line takes a beating out there. there is no need to cast a mile i just simply flip the bait out about 20 feet from where im standing and let it sink to the bottom. as for bait i go out in the morning and dig horse clams, cockles, and any other clam i can find and use all the parts of the clam. i also get a few sandshrimp, and pile worms but because the shrimp and pile worms don't stay on long <even though they are great baits to use> i tend to just stick with clam parts. and for lure fishing for bottomfish i use grubs 3-5 inches on 3/4-1oz jigheads. or carolina rig the grubs and slowly drag them along the bottom pausing every few seconds. and with lures u will want to cover more water so cast as far as u can and work back slowly, colors that tend to work well are chartreuse, green, white/red, motor oil, and browns. (e.g. tan, light browns) oh be prepared and bring plenty of weights and hooks i lost about 30 setups this weekend but thats with 3 ppl fishing. the weights in westport are very expensive i spent over 12 dollars on 12 1 oz sinkers at a shop cause i ran out. so be prepared. good luck hope this helps

Some real good info there for you rancocasrich.

I'll add a few more:

Try fishing the finger jetties at dusk, using light-colored grubs (3 inches). The black rockfish school near the rocks at night. Use a light jighead--I seem to have better success with 1/4 ounce, versus heavier jig heads.

Try using grocery shrimp or squid pieces for bait for the perch and greenling. They are a lot more durable and easier to get than the sand shrimp or clams that you dig yourself.

Try fishing at the fishing boardwalk...drop your bait next to the rocks below. I've had great fishing for pile perch there. On my best day (about 15 years ago), they were clobbering my bait (beach sand crabs). I caught 27 of them (back then, there was no limit for them).

Try fishing your bait under a bobber--the roving schools of rockfish will bite if they are not on the bottom.

oh yes good point shad i did hook up with more seabass at dusk and kept on them till it got too dark to see. i meant to put that in there thanx buddy

Yeah, it's a real thrill casting that grub into the darkness and getting a hit. Can't even see where your lure drops in the water or see the fish, until it is next to the rocks ready to be netted.

For that night fishing, those light colored grubs work well. I've even used some glow-in-the-dark grubs. BUT the best grub I've ever used for this night fishing at the finger jetties was the Berkley GULP 2-inch or 3-inch chartreuse minnow. It's not really plastic (made up of some organic environmentally safe material), but supposedly it puts out more scent than natural bait.

I actually limited on sea bass (10 fish) one night that I used these GULP grubs at the jetties.

we took out a medium action 9 ft kunan, an 8 ft uglystick, and my son used a 6ft medium heavy diawa, and of course for my fun and enjoyment i brought along the ultra light with only 6 lb test on it that was fun. :thumright all of the poles were geared with spinning reels

fishing was pretty fast. and the limits out there are 10 rockfish and 2 of every other kind of bottomfish for a total of 15 bottom fish regardless of species. :thumleft:
