Underwater footage with REEL cameras WL.com Offer

Post by Mike Carey » Thu Nov 20, 2014 5:38 pm

OK, I know everyone talks about and buys GoPros. For the past year Aaron and I have been product testing the HD Slayer from REEL Camera, out of Coure d' Alene, ID. We have totally put our GoPros away and are now using exclusively REEL Cameras. There's so many extra features and they are much easier to operate. Here's a promo video that features some really cool underwater footage on the Columbia River for sturgeon:

If you're interested jump on that special deal we are offering: $106 of bundled extras PLUS $50 (code "lake50" at check out) AND $30 worth of tackle from our sponsors. It's an a amazing deal for a great camera!

Will this special offer be going on in May? That's probably when I could afford to get one.

More important, is there a plug/feature to plug in to a Lowrance HDS 12 to watch the images/movie/vid on the big depth finder? That is the type of camera I want to get. Also, is there a monitor to watch real time what the camera sees, as it's filming under water, or do you have to wait until you get home and put the vid on the computer?

Not sure about May, but I'm sure we'll have a deal, it just may not be this exact one.
No real time monitoring, but I understand the next camera they are putting out will be wi fi controllable. You can view immediately after recording as the camera has a built in LCD screen. So for example you could send it down to the bottom to see just what it looks like.
BTW, the coloring hue of green is due to how deep we were filming. You lose colors as you go deeper. That said, the camera has a built in LED which does a decent job of illuminating things in the dark. GoPros don't have this feature.

Here's our "fancy camera ad". We're endorsing this camera because it really is a great camera. If you're in the market for a GoPro please consider this camera and the deal we can offer our WL.com members.

We are selling the camera through this order page from the company, REEL Cameras. They will process and mail the order to you. Like Amx said, be sure to enter that promo code "LAKE50" to get the $50 off. Using this order page will also get you the $106 package deal which includes a nice selection of fishing gear from our sponsors, valued at $30.

Total is $252.99 with free shipping option. No tax collected that I can see (company is based in ID).

Thanks!

Dang! That is a steal. Talking to the wife right now about a potential Christmas gift. Throw the money at this guys, I don't see any other camera like this for the price. Insane deal, I hope to capture all my catches on this camera in the coming year.

Did I miss it somewhere, Mike? What did you mount the camera to while on the bottom of the river?
I thought I read it has a sort of monopod that is available, but that couldn't be more than 8-10' of reach.

Awfully impressive camera. That slow motion of the large sturgeon's mouth was just amazing!

The mounting that we used to get the sturgeon footage was of our own design. Can't buy this set up anywhere that I am aware of. PM if you want specifics.

To be clear, we had to accept the possibility of the camera getting lodged in the rocks and lost, or a massive sturgeon chomping down on the camera (seeing the LED light as bait). So I wouldn't recommend this for the casual user.

You still have time to order the HD Slayer from REEL Cameras in time to arrive for Christmas. And we have Sponsor gift packs valued at $30 left so that's a nice bonus. But more importantly, I think you'll really appreciate the extra features these cameras have that GoPros don't have. I know GoPros are the "industry standard", but that doesn't mean they are the best camera out there. Check out the REEL Camera site and compare the features for yourself.
If you decide to buy be sure to use our order page link and add the LAKE50 code for the discount.

Happy Holidays!

It's an interesting camera. I went ahead and ordered one, was going to wait until May, got it Fri. Still was able to get the little 8' boat and motor I wanted. [biggrin] Waiting for the head strap to come in. It'll take me a little while to learn it. Come spring I'll get an extra battery and a couple other things. Then on to the little lakes and hopefully vid some fish catches come summertime.

Cool Amx! For sure you'll want to look into getting an external battery that you can hook up by USB. I picked up a smaller 2.6amp stick that I'm sure will run the camera all day, just bungie cord it to the mounting area. Two 32 gb cards and you'll be able to run it all day, assuming no rain. In which case it needs to go back into it's waterproof case.

I haven't figured out how to attach the camera to anything, as there isn't anything that'll screw into the fitting in the bottom of the camera itself, so it can be only used with the case, for now, but I'll get all that figured out. Yes I want to get the external battery pack, extra battery, and the power bank for weekends. Maybe even a helmet and that attaching bracket/fitting. And maybe the chest strap/harness. I'm also thinking of getting the 3 lenses kit. And a couple 32 gb cards. Hopefully they'll have a charger that the spare battery can be plugged intoto charge it while the camera is being used. Otherwise what I'm seeing is that the batteries can only be charged while in the camera, and so you'll have to wait until you can use the camera again.

Regarding the attachments, the one I really like is the clamp:

The wand is OK, but to short for my preference:

As you can see, those two feature the screw into the bottom of the camera and/or case option.

You're correct, the mounts that come with the camera use the traditional go-pro like case screws.

However, another way of managing the screw mount option would be to go to Home Depot and find the right screw and thread that works with the screw hole on the bottom of the camera. Once you find that right size it's just a matter of using your imagination to come up with ways to make your own mounts for the camera. Or, spend $25 and get the clamp, which really is quite amazingly versatile.

As to the batteries, you are correct, the only way to charge the batteries is to have them in the camera and plug in the USB. Which is the same as a GoPro. I have the luxury of having several spare batteries and a couple cameras, so I can always be charging. The external battery option I have used is not part of REEL Cameras, it's just any external battery that you find at places like Fry's to charge up cell phones and the like. In this case, you're running the camera with the camera battery in it, but it's constantly charged and draining the external battery. This is the option that allows you to film all day, filling up as many 32gb cards as you want to scan through afterward. Another plus is because the camera is not in the case with this option you'll get great unmuffled sound.

We can meet at the sports show in January and I can show you some set ups if you'd like.

The wife just order mine for Christmas, it was 249.00 OTD. Nice thank you Walakes and Reel Cmeras looking forward to filming so fishing and hunting trips!!! [thumbsup]

The only down side is I think the extra battery went up in price and is currently out of stock. Price is now 50.00 I think a few months ago it was only 20.00 but I could be wrong.
