Absolute BS. I'll catch you next time I see you Nate, and I officially eat HUMBLE PIE.
But that said, I totally disagree and think it's all in the way you ask the question. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but you aren't being paid to guide people fishing. You're counseling them. If you said to your clients "bring a fishing pole if you want to fish while we are up there doing our counseling session" how can that possibly be defined as you're a guide? Oy va, between this and the posted announcement about more rivers being banked for wild steelhead I'm really glad I'm not a guide.

Re: Outdoor counseling legality
I know, I'm not happy I'm right. My wife was on the same side as you, I told her about it and she called BS. The wilderness therapy industry has come under attack for being under regulated in the past decade. I knew if you asked WDFW if you need a guide license to have your buddy chip in, they'd tell you you need a guide licenseMike Carey wrote:Absolute BS. I thought it was absolute horse crap too, but this is what our lovely state does to the little man! If anyone has any questions in the future email commercial sales and not WDFW
I copied and pasted a pretty good junk of this conversation into the email so they could see exactly what we were talking about. The way I look at it is if you arent taking your friends fishing for free, you need a guide permit.

Re: Outdoor counseling legality
A couple years ago a buddy and I fished out of La Push for 3 days for salmon and bottom fish. He towed his boat all the way out there and back and paid for that gas, the boats gas, the bait, all the gear....etc...my end was picking up the accommodations and food. Do you believe my friend was illegally operating a guide service without a permit because he did not pay for everything? I do not but I'm curious how you think about this based on your last statement.Steelheadin360 wrote:The way I look at it is if you arent taking your friends fishing for free, you need a guide permit.
I don't see this as much different then when my buddies want to chip in from time to time when I take them fishing.
I think if you're profiting off of fishing you need some sort of permit from the state, guide or commercial. Please, please someone try to argue I'm profiting off of fishing with my wife!

Buddies chipping in is just common courtesy in my opinion. I know I like too when someone's taking me fishing.
Sorry to hear it fishinChristian, I don't agree with this either. You're profiting off of counseling which you have the proper paperwork for and that should be the end of it.
I guess next time I carpool to Portland with a buddy he'll have to look into a taxi license in case I want to fill the car once. God this state is getting ridiculous!
That was a cool crappie video! Looked like a lot of fun!

Re: Outdoor counseling legality
Although I accept the ruling, ? It is just another intrusion of a government out of control. We need to vote 'em out, every chance we get, till they get the message that they work for us. America is no longer the land of the free, and I'm starting to wonder about that brave thing. It's getting rarer. I'm glad I lived most of my life when I did. I hope the younger ones wake up. The parallels between the rise of Nazi Germany and the regulations they enacted is scary. We're NOT there yet, but...

Just for the record, I appreciate ALL the comments that were given solving this. May not like the solution, or its implications, but the efforts and honesty were greatly appreciated, even the distracting video... Nice touch...
