internet fisherman ''do you fish''

Post by OFFDAAHOOK » Sat Jul 14, 2012 9:38 pm

heres a quote from one of da best fishers i know Gyt.....''.Pretty much all the online boards are like that. Even the ones up here are a full of a bunch of people who don't fish. Personally I think if you ever say "vicariously fishing through you", you have no business on a fishing board. Fishing takes time, you want to catch fish? Then fish, and fish a lot. I have failed a semester of college (and sequentially was kicked out) and have lost girlfriends because of it. If you're at work all the time wishing you had the time to fish, the you're a ***********. Stay off the water, you won't catch fish and just get in the way of the people who do.''

I fish therefore I am. I think I've done more recent lake reports than just about anyone on the board. It's not just the fishing boards either. I go to a few car stereo and performance auto/racing boards and to listen to what some of the people claim to have raced/owned everyone but me must be a millionaire to afford all the cars/gear they say they've owned/raced/driven etc. If you have a spare million please send it my way! So are you saying you are not a "real" fisherman unless you a failure at college or relationships? Bah. My grandma raised 5 kids, was a school teacher and started/ran a cattle ranch. She fished whenever she could until the day she died. She didn't care who fished or how much, she didn't care about catch rates or being outfished. She didn't care if someone who didn't fish wanted to talk fishing or just hang out and watch her fish. And she was the best fisherman I ever met.
There is no reason to start calling people on this site names because they fall into your very narrow definition of a fisherman.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I have a college education and work for a MULTI-billion dollar corporation, yet I still work hard for my money 10 hours a day. I have a teenaged daughter and the usual family responsibilities. This had cut heavily into my fishing time as the family responsibilities took a higher toll on my time and my well being. My doctor basically ordered me to find a relaxing hobby before someone got hurt. *LOL* Not that fishing is all that relaxing at times, but I stop and drop a line somewhere on the way home usually at least once a week, and try to make at least a half day of it at least once per weekend.

But does this make me a fisherman? I think what makes me a fisherman is respecting my adversaries and the rules set forth to apprehend them. To catch and release them without harm if I do not intend to harvest them. To pack out my trash when I leave so the next person can enjoy the experience as much as I do. To loan or give a complete stranger gear if necessary so they can enjoy the experience as much as I do. I can not count the number of bobbers, terminal gear, line, lures, and jars of powerbait etc I have given away to man and child alike while out enjoying my favorite sport. To have respect for those fishing around me. To give them the space to fish without snagging each others gear, and to move on if necessary to prevent altercations that diminish my enjoyment of the sport. It is not 'my spot' or 'your spot' and I am not willing to fight you for it like some knuckle dragging neanderthal. To respect the safety of those fishing around me by not operating my boat or tow vehicle while intoxicated. Lastly to pass on the knowledge and experience that I have to others to try and give someone else the opportunity to catch such a tricky but rewarding opponent as the lowly fish. That is what makes a fisherman/woman.

I get out fishing on occasion. I could get out more but the medicine the doctors gave me for my OC is working.

Slayer - you don't need to fish everyday of the week to know what you are doing on the water. Are you perhaps just getting frustrated with the sheer number of people who get out and fish in this State? I have curbed the amount of river fishing that I do due to folks with your kind of attitude. Play nice and educate the "part-timers" and newbies or go get yourself a sled and find some remote locations to fish. Now excuse me while I do some work on my boat so that I can stay out of the way of you hardcore fishermen.

My post IS my opinion, I'm entitled to it just like the next guy. The edit was an non-PG word which is unacceptable on this site so I ****'ed out . If you have an issue with my moderation, bring it to Mike and he can deal with me as he see's fit.

What I think you are all missing is the fact that slayer was posting a quote from someone he knows. I do not believe this is his feelings though as I have met, fished, and been helped by slayer. Tony is a good guy, you just have to get to know him. I think some of these attacks need to be more directed at the person tony is quoting, not necessarily at tony himself.

Now, can't we all just get along?

Slayer is known to write post's with a sort of "slang" and comments in ways that gets attention. That and pictures of himself hodling fish belly up. Got him removed from another site. That is what oneshot was commenting too in his post. He either rubs you the wrong way, or doesn't. But one thing is for certain, he will rub!.

Do you really care what someone is saying on the internet? You probably shouldn't.

I don't even know where to begin, so won't. Well, OK, I will. As a rule, why post another person's comments/observations. If you have an opinion, post it. Or, post the comment and express your opinion. Otherwise it would seem your just stirring things up and sitting back to see everyone's reaction.

Which predictably go one way - south.

But let's say this is even a thread worthy of people's time/energy. It's lame to think that being a fisherman equals amount of time put in. That's like saying you can't enjoy music unless you listen to it all the time. Or enjoy the fine arts unless you spend all your time pursuing it. People are a little more complex than that, and being "a fisherman" is much more than the amount of time you spend on the water. Obviously the more time you spend on the water the better an angler you'll become. So what? Who cares? Life isn't a competition. If someone isn't able to get on the water as much as others and enjoys reading about other's adventures, what's the big deal? Like I said, seems to be a pretty lame opinion.

JMHO.
