Two cycle oil mix

Post by Big D » Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:00 am

I recently came to be the new owner of an older Eskimo powered ice auger. The label on the gas tank states the proper mix is 24 to 1 and I'm fine with that however while reading on another forum I found many recommendations for using synthetic 2 cycle oil such as Opti-2 or Amsoil Saber in a much thinner mix. Anything from 50 to 1 all the way up to 100 to 1. Users state that using synthetic oil in my mix will cause less smoke, run at higher revs and have less oil out of the muffler.
Any thoughts?

Gas oil ratio has a lot less to do with modern oils and everything to do with materials used in the engine. Regardless of what is bantered on a forum, I'd stick with manufactures ratio but 24:1 does sound a bit much. I can't say I've ever heard of a ratio that high that wasn't just for break in..... I'd probably check with the engine manufacturer. Bear in mind is is a small air cooled engine. You should be able to find something on the engine to identify it. Those augers are so weird.... I think a lot were made out back in the wood shed.

far be it from me to argue ... OK n/m ... i'm sold on Amsoil products ... Quick Shot is a miracle drug and can be added to any of their other products ... a lot of my equipment is old and i KNOW Amsoil has saved me fix-it costs ... and i dont have fuel going bad all the time .. and some of my old beasts run better than they have in years .... from chainsaws from the mid 80s to a old '75 20 hp merc ... and the old merc dont leave nearrrr the ugly sheen behind me as it did with the old 50:1 merc oil O-: ... i admit i mix a lil richer than instructed but that's because i'm old ... even tho it's proved itself for some years now i still have trust issues when i see what a tiny bit of oil it is compared to the "old" days lolol ...

track down your lacal Amsoil guy ... tell them your concerns .. ask about their guarantees and what they cover ... then if your still skeptical try it in some old beater that's hard to start 'n runs like (EDITED) ...
the only prob i've had with Amsoil products is ... the old dry'd out fuel lines (that should have been replaced anyways) on my old weedeater sprang some impressive leaks lololol ... GL ... DOG
