Is it Long Lake or Lake spokane???

Post by AJ's Dad » Fri May 24, 2013 5:56 am

This is not a debate, it's a fun, fact gathering forum post to try to answer this unique question.
After reading another thread where this topic was being discussed, I thought it would be fun to see if anyone can locate the history of the name of this lake that resides in both Spokane and Stevens counties.

A quick google search shows this lake being referred to as Lake Spokane/Long Lake and many comments saying Lake Spokane also known as Long Lake, and vice versa.
A Wikipedia search shows this statement when reading about the Spokane River.
It flows in a zigzag course along the southern edge of the Selkirk Mountains, forming the southern boundary of the Spokane Indian Reservation, where it is impounded by the Long Lake Dam to form Long Lake, a 15 mi (24 km) reservoir.

Fishing regulation also seem to refer to it as Long Lake and the Long Lake dam.
What are your thoughts and where can you find your information on this lake????? [biggrin]

A little more info:
This is from the Spokane River - Geographic Response Plan

In the areas of the river that have become reservoirs, such as Long Lake, the shoreline consists of residential property with boat docks.

Long Lake (aka Lake Spokane) is a 24-mile long reservoir that extends from the downstream side of the Nine Mile Falls Dam to the Long Lake Dam. It was created when Long Lake Dam impounded the Spokane River in 1915.

So far I'm unable to locate a time period where the name of the lake changed to Lake Spokane.

I've always known it as Long Lake.

So anything else is confusing and doesn't count. [biggrin]
