So, I am looking into my first truck.
I feel like this is a goofy question to be asking, but concern is how are those of you driving full size pickup trucks, fitting your rods into your trucks?

Think of it this way.. Yes, many rods are 2 piece rods, but I have rods that are 8'6" blanks that are single piece. Even a full size pickup bed is 8'. I am lookijg at 2016 F150 SuperCrew cabs. So, 4 doors, then a 6.5' bed. I would have a canopy on the back.
So, does that mean on these 8'6" rods that people run them up through a 'Small' split window between rear seat and truck bed?
They do make those magnetic rod holders that go on your hood of vehicle, and then the full rod runs up the roof, but that seems stupid, as how do you leave your truck in a parking lot (with rod) and go into a store?

Anyway, must be an easy answer here. It got me thinking to look at Ford Expiditions for the interior cab length, but kinda prefer a truck.

Personally I hate driving pickup trucks. Terrible visibility when you put on a canopy and they drive like trucks . That is why I drive a Suburban. You would be doing yourself a huge favor to drive one before deciding on a Ford anything. I can put any rod on the inside of my burb, it drives like a car and rides like a Caddy. I can also put a whole sheet of ply wood in the back with the seats folded. It also has load leveling. I hook up the boat and drive a block and its riding level again. No pumps or bladders to go bad. It is a very mature product unlike the F. When I have the entire family going to any event, the 3rd row seat goes in and it seats 9 comfortably. If you look at the reliability statistics your mind will be made up. And if you ever decide to sell, there's no comparison.

Wifey is more into the Expedition/Suburban idea. But I was always hanging on to the idea, what if some day you wanted to get some topsoil from the nursery, etc.
(Maybe that is the one time in 5 years, that you just rent a truck) Those full size SUV's are so bloody expensive.
I will def put both Truck/SUV through the driving test.

I get bags of dirt all the time, I just put a tarp down. If you want a bulk load, have them deliver, you don't want that much weight ruining your truck anyways. Over loading is the fastest way to kill a truck.

99% of the time I leave my rods in my boat when I go fishing. The other 1% of the time, I go with someone else. I drive a 2015 Ram 2500 crew cab. I have the advantage of hauling what I want in the bed, and when I need to take my rods and go to go meet up with someone and take my rods without the boat, they ride in the passenger seat area. I lay the handle end of the rod on the floor up front on the passenger side, and let the rod go through between the seat and the console. That lets the rod run all the way back up next to the roof in the back, behind the drivers seat. That works even if you have someone sitting in the front passenger seat. Just don't let them step on the rods. That can be a tight fit with more than a couple of rods. I have taken my 7'9" rod that way with room to spare. Your 8'6" might work as well. Yes, my truck rides like a truck, that's for sure, but I kind of like that.

I second the Suburban idea, am on my 3rd one and they last a LONG time. Couldn't see myself driving anything else.

While I wouldn't haul dirt in mine, I have heard about these things called 'utility trailers'. Seems they only run a few hundred bucks to own and maybe $15 - $20 to rent one when the need arises. When it comes to hauling stuff for the yard though, I myself use these things called 'sons'. Only costs me a beer or two.

Hahaha, yep, best tools I have, extremely multi purpose. You do need to schedule but the warranty can't be beat and quite often they do run on beer.

Yep, good tools indeed and they always seem to have more of the same vintage that run on beer as well.

A suburban is my next vehicle. I have a 1990 xtra long bed Toyota now. Before that I had a Suburban. The pickup is great for hauling wood , manure for the yard and off roading. With my back being out most of the time a pickup dosent help.I agree with a Suburban type vehicle. Much more comfort for an old man such as myself.I've thought of a canopy but I like the visibility without one.

After a lot of thought, I decided to go with the Ford Expedition. I began to come back to my whole original issue was that I wanted more cargo area, than the last 3 Subaru Outbacks, that I've owned.
The rare need for a truck bed just means rent a truck when I need topsoil.
Not pulling the trigger though until Nov.

ya id wait till the 2017 models hit the showrooms..theyre coming out with a 10 speed transmission. joint effort with GM I believe.
