lol yeah they are the everett hockey team, they play in the same league as the seattle thunderbirds or spokane chiefs, you should check them out (everett) tickets are super cheap less then $25 in the lower bowl, you cant go wrong for 3+ hours of entertainment for that price

And here I thought it was a reference to Winchester Silvertip bullets or bears (the four legged kind). ![RollEyes [rolleyes]](./images/smilies/msp_rolleyes.gif)

With hunting season just around the corner, my first though when reading the topic was, "Silvertips are horrible hunting rounds." Stick with a good bonded core bullet that won't fragment on impact.
As for the hockey team, I work with a guy who volunteers as their locker room manager for home games. He's pretty stoked for the upcoming season as he said no "fatties" showed up for training camp this year.

Should I move this thread to the hunting forum?

Hockey hunting it's all up to you........ Since I don't drink much anymore, hockey games just don't seem to hold their appeal for me. 70's and 80's Thunderbirds, that was hockey....or was it just fighting?

I will be up in Everett when the Royals come to town.
Re: its almost Silvertip season.
Silvertips? I don't get the whole hockey thing at all. Seems like a bunch of puck clearing, ramming guys into walls (give it a fancy name like checking) and illegally crossing the blue line. Power plays, and dudes on skates with missing teeth. I went to a couple games back in the 80's, got kicked out of one game, cause my drunk buddy was intimidating the coach of he opposing team. Second game I attended sober, and that was not nearly as much fun. Never went back. Tried to watch a match or two on tv, but again, loose interest rather quickly.

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
well i would say go check them out in person in everett tickets are realy cheap 20 or less. but this might not be the best year, we have a really young team (goalie included) and unfortionaltly there record reflects that.

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
Was hunting Quail or Dove in Wenatchee a couple years back. A friend and I stopped into a Applebee's for some grub. We sat at the bar. By chance, ended up sitting next to the coach of the Wenatchee hockey team.
Wenatchee was playing that night. He described the game, and the reasoning behind checking. I do not recall what was said regarding "checking", and the motive behind it (he might have said something like, "it supports the fellow player"?). I also do not get the fighting. What is the motive behind that, when it comes to game strategy?
To a novice, who does not understand the game (me). It appears the checking and fighting results in banging up or bruising another player, enough to affect their play. It kind of translates to a football player, tackling another player in such a way as to purposefully hurt them. Bettering there chance of winning.
The game is as crude as they come! Who ever thought high sticking was okay, way back when. Before that was ruled unsportsmanlike and a illegal move?
When the word hockey is mentioned, who does not immediately think of a fight? I think of that, players in the penalty box, blood on shirts, and stitches........sad but true.
It is a wonder, why the fans don't break out in a frenzied, free for all, fist fight.
I really would like to understand the game. Can someone describe the purpose of checking and fighting in hockey?

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
i am no expert but just from watching a good check in the play of the game gets the teams addrehline going and totaly changes the momentum of the game, also a good check with knock someone over giving your team a short 5 on 4 advantage crashing towrards the goal. fighting is usually there to stop bigger guys from hitting and actually hurting smaller players, if you watch most teams only have a couple guys that fight (aka the goon) also with the amount of physical contact and inherehert frustrastion that goes along with checking fighing is a safe to release that anger, a dirty check into the boards can lead to serious injury, if you have netflix check out the movie goon, its a little fighting heavy but its funny and will kinda show the purpose (kinda)

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
First off this is a Hockey discussion. Don't over think it, trying to analyze it will only make your head hurt. In the beginning it was a good outlet for the local boys to get their aggressions out against the neighboring towns in a semi structured environment, much better than a rumble behind the grand stands on Friday night. Sticks and skates or knives and clubs, take your pick.MotoBoat wrote:Was hunting Quail or Dove in Wenatchee a couple years back. A friend and I stopped into a Applebee's for some grub. As for the fans joining in, it used to be a common affair. The Seattle police used to put more Blue at the Thunderbirds games than they did for May Day…… It’s all been rather gentrified as of late, it’s a sign of our times, the passive aggressing pussies ruin everything they touch.

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
agreed!! every year the teams get smaller and faster, not bigger and more physical there a few teams in the whl that hold size, its hard to watch when your team is full of little guys

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
I am not trying to beat up on the game of hockey, really I am not. I kind of sermized that a good check would provide the advantage of a 5 on 4. Seems a bit like a 3 stooges move to gain advantage.drysuperfly52 wrote:i am no expert but just from watching a good check in the play of the game gets the teams addrehline going and totaly changes the momentum of the game, also a good check with knock someone over giving your team a short 5 on 4 advantage crashing towrards the goal. fighting is usually there to stop bigger guys from hitting and actually hurting smaller players, if you watch most teams only have a couple guys that fight (aka the goon) also with the amount of physical contact and inherehert frustrastion that goes along with checking fighing is a safe to release that anger, a dirty check into the boards can lead to serious injury, if you have netflix check out the movie goon, its a little fighting heavy but its funny and will kinda show the purpose (kinda)
Also causing slight confusion is. Fighting is used to curb larger guys from checking, and possibly injuring smaller guys. Yet, fighting, especially fist fighting in itself can cause injury. So, in affect, by "injuring" the big guy through "fighting", to stop the "big guy" from "injuring" the "little guy" by way of checking is a retaliation.
Is there enough back up players to fill in, in the event there is injury, caused from the preventative injuries fighting is supposed to save?
If fighting, really helped. Wouldn't fighting during a game, be non existent?
As a fan. Is fighting a part of the game that fans enjoy?
It sound like, if it draws a crowd. Do it!

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
Remember most of the fighting is being done in full pads, gloves and helmets. Even when the helmet is thrown, they're still wearing big gloves with lots of padding. Not many get hurt in the fighting, most are hurt in the check.

Re: its almost Silvertip season.
It has been a while since I last saw a hockey game. At that time, the gloves were the first to come off. Is there now, a rule stating the gloves must stay on ?Bodofish wrote:Remember most of the fighting is being done in full pads, gloves and helmets. Re: its almost Silvertip season.
no gloves come off, remember the players are both grabbing eachother its not like boxing where your punch for punch, your all wrapped up in the other guy its rare to get solid show stopping blows, plus its hard to throw your body into it and stay standing when your standing on ice skates. most teams have 3-4 "lines" of players about 18-20 players are in suited and play everygame they players also are only on the ice for no more then a couple minutes at a time, reducing fatigue and have a chance to talk to the team doc if sometome needs taped or bandaid or what ever.
