More info on white fish fishing

Post by driftercn83 » Mon Feb 02, 2009 12:21 pm

I went sat to the stilly and fished whitefish had over 40 fish on none landed. need to know more about the size hooks and style of hooks I should be using cause they seem to break off with heavy bait holders mind you I am using the smallest one I could get as well as the smallest gold egg hooks I could get my hands on.
An old man once told me that if you stick a worm on a hook drop it over the bank you can feed your self for life. I tried it modified it and geez I am beating them off with a broom now.

I have caught 100's of white fish on the Yakima and many other systems chasing trout and steelhead and the Wenatchee is full of them and can never think once of loosing a white fish ever they fight like a puff ball and bodies are lean on mean#-o :-&
What brand of hooks were you using and were you slamming the hook set?:compress:
They cannot be to small of a Hook on a whitie there mouths are pretty small as well any small medium fly is swell:colors:
It might be a New world record:cheers: to hook 40 white fish and not land a single one:colors: :dwarf:

Swede's onto something there and I'll add my 2 cents as well. Now this applies to all types of fishing, but especially river fishing where the hook regularly comes in contact with the bottom. Regularly check to make sure your hook is sharp! If you can lightly drag it along your fingernail without it digging in, it's not sharp! If you hang-up briefly on the bottom and you get your gear back, check the hook and also check the line to make sure it hasn't been abraded. If you miss a fish, check the hook and above all check the hook before you use it. Now for small hooks like you will be using for whitefish get a small stone or diamond file as this will work best on honing your hooks. Save the larger metal files you see at the tackle shops for larger hooks. File against the point so as not to leave a burr on the end, very much like sharpening a knife edge. Oh and did I mention, regularly check you hook!?

make sure you check the reg's as to the size of hook that can be used. the naches has to be a size #14 or smaller and i've done well with a dark whitefish fly set up that you can buy or a dark nymph. a maggot seemed to work great but you have to be sure to set the hook well enough, most of the hooks are stuck in the lip area which isn't much to hold if you play them hard.

#6 gama with 6lbs leader, 2 #1 or #2 split shot, dont jerk just lift up or start reeling that is how i was hooking them. Bait bead egg orangelarge or small, sandshrimp, nightcrawler, small bits of eggs make sure whitefish rules are not in affect.
If it looks fishy, Then fish it, If it dont look fishy, fish it anyways. <')}}}}><

Im like Swede on this.I fish for Whitefish using maggotts and maggott hooks. I catch as many fishing for steelies using a gomakatsu 2/0 hook. The Whitefish have really soft mouths.I've lost some on those tiny hooks also. But then that could be me.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.
