As mentioned this issue came about due to the number of "Teak Surfing" incidents that were reported when the practice became popular. Obviously those who fell victim were not in an enclosed cabin, so having an open boat is not a safe bet. Simply having the exhaust blow back in your face due to wind is enough to bring on headaches, fatigue, nausea, etc. The eddy that a windshield can create is enough to do the trick as well. Point is, if you can smell the exhaust, you are sucking down CO so change direction and get some fresh air. Prolonged exposure to CO has some nasty side effects which is why the CDC and OSHA have published set limits.

Its hard to believe that in my open air aluminum boat that this would be an issue. I can see in a cuddy cabin or closed bow area but even in a alum boat?

Especially since recommended prevention would be to open a window and let fresh air in.

So if we are on a crowded lake ie... Lk Wa sockeye then were all exposed to CO in a horrible way.Let me ask this then. During Seafair with hydros, Blue Angels,Flying machines and all kinds of boats going on were at a bad risk there too. Maybe we should have hybrid boat motors much like a MinKota. I cant believe that the lil amount of CO we put out to be as bad as traffic on I5 of I 90. I have my sticker on my windshield . Its free so why not. In fact I now have 5 stickers that Ive recieved. One sticker has lasted me 3 years now. Seems like boat fishing is really unhealthy.

We'll have to give up our motorboats and use row boats and canoes. Electric motors give of vibs and magnetic forces, soon 'they' will find out those will kill us too.

Another thing that is good to know about CO is that our red blood cells that carry O2 (oxygen) will grab CO about 200 times faster than it grabs O2. And it will hold on to it not allowing us to get O2. We get some CO all the time; if you smoke you are getting CO when you smoke. If some one gets high exposure they need to see a doctor. For extreme exposure they will need a hyperbaric chamber. So if someone is unconscious, or "not with it" that would require medical aid even if they come around with fresh air.
As for the CO monitor, some larger vessels have them. I have one in my home and if you heat your home with a flame (gas, oil, wood) you should too. A few years ago our wise legislators made it a law in WA that ALL homes have them after some people took a BBQ in the house when their power was out, and died.

I have CO detectors in my home near the furnace area. In a hundred years the salmon will be fishing for humans.
