Owyhee River

If you haven't fished the Owyhee River near Boise, you should give it a try if you are in the area. It is a great Brown Trout river. Mike just posted my latest video that I did on the river. I'm going back down in June and can't wait.

Marc,
I grew up in the Boise area and have fished the Owyhee just about every year since I was 8 or 9 years old. The "tailwater" area below the dam is a great fishery and can produce some very large fish. Unfortunately, the "word is out" on the area and the river has become unbearably busy most of the time.

The upper parts of the river are very good as well. The access is a little difficult in areas however the fishing is great.

While you are down there, try and find the time to drive up the canyon above the dam....some of the best canyon/high desert scenery around!

If you have the time for a little drive out of Boise you should try the Middle Fork of Boise River. It is a relatively unknown (outside the area) river that can produce a ton of nice Rainbows and Cutts.

Unfortunately, good water goes with fame. Oddly enough, the day that I shot the video, I saw only about 5 people on the river. One gentleman that I met up there took the time to show me the river and a few not so known tricks. Had a great day.

When I am down there in June with a friend, we are going to fish the Owyhee and most likely the Middle Fork. I've never fished the Middle Fork before, so it will be fun exploring and fishing it. In the evenings we may try the Boise in town. There are some great spots on the river right in town. Hopefully the rubber hatch won't be too large. [glare]

I began fishing the Boise River in town in the mid 70's. People passing on the "Green Belt" (pathway system similar to the Centennial Trail) used to ask why I was fishing in town where they were sure there were no fish. No one in those days used to fish the river in town.

For a time, the Idaho State Record Brown Trout came from the Boise River near Eagle Island. It was caught on a mouse pattern tied on a "0" hook! The owner of a local fly shop caught it and wanted to keep it secret, but the word got out and he officially recorded it with the State.

From what my friends down there tell me the Boise gets a lot of pressure and the Browns that used to be plentiful have been replaces with planters.

Before you go up on the Middle fork you should check with a local fly shop (Idaho Angler is a good one) to get the scoop. I used to use a lot of terrestrial patterns (Hoppers) with great success on the lower portions of that river.

Sound like a great time!!
