Watched a guy do it on the bogie this past winter. Not sure what kind of fly it was but he hooked into two steelies and lost them both.

I've seen a guy using a red streamer up at reiter however he was using about 12 feet of leader with it so basically he was flossing them which is not exactly the most sporty way of catching fish.

OK here is my take on it. When people fly fish and need to get the fly down to close to the bottom they use a sinking line or tip, a weighted fly. So in essence they are drift fishing the fly.
With a drift rig the fly gets to the bottom right a way. But I think that it is right on the bottom so the fish might miss it whereas with the fly line it may float just above the bottom. Such as the idea of the corky which floats above the weight.

Picture a bobber and jig. A jig is a weighted fly but it has to be just above the bottom and that is the job of the bobber

I have drifted a fly but haven't caught anything. No one else around caught anything either so it wasn't a good test.
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

I have tried drift fishing with a weighted fly before and it did not work because the fly would just sink all the way to the bottom wheres a corky floats up 12", or however long your leader is, and into the strike zone. I modified these flies by adding foam eggs to them to make them float and they have worked that way. I assume any buoyant streamer flies would work just as well.

Another thing I have seen/heard of is drift fishing a mini hootchie. This works pretty good for pinks and silvers.

Dont mean to bring heated debate. I will say this though and leave it alone after that. The two fish that I have seen caught with this method were hooked outside of the mouth. The guy retained both fish. By the book questionable at best in my opinion.

As long as its before the foward gill plate FISH ON. Whats funny is if you read any book on steelheading and articles or talk to people that are not from this forum. But people that are known for fishing. And they will tell you during summer months when its low and clear you want to make your presentations smaller and leaders longer. See I understand this cause I fish year round and see the differences. Summer times longer leaders keep your corkies away from your weight bouncing off the rocks causing a visual distraction. Your weight too close to your corkies when rivers are crystal clear will always lead to less bites.

"The two fish that I have seen caught with this method were hooked outside of the mouth."

I have 20/12 vision and its honestly hard for me to tell where people are hooking there fish around me. I will sometimes try and get a good look at what there using if catching fish and Im not. Ill still have to ask them most of the time. Your vision must be pretty good.

LOL I almost forgot what this post was about. I dont fish with flies at all. But to be honest with ya if you think it might work try it. One day I was gettin nothing at all. I switched to a glo ball and bam fish on. 12 pound hen. No one else around me caught one that day. Just luck, or maybe they was sick of seeing the same colors over and over that day.
More fish please!

It wasnt that my vision was good it was the fact that the old duff called a few of us over to look at the fish and show us "how to catch fish". I do agree that in low clear water longer leader is a must. But 12 feet of leader with 1 oz of lead is not to keep weight away from the corky and increase "strikes". But whatever Im not here to argue the ethics of steelhead fishing, to each his own.

my brother has done a fair amount of drift fishing with flies, but I'm not sure what his setup is. I have caught a ton of bass outside of the mouth, in the eye, etc. I floss for bass.

I have drifting flies. I forgot the name they call them but you drift it like you would corky and yarn.Wooly Buggers I think they are called. They work well in lower rivers without a rain in a while.I too get a kick out of the flossing debate.Ifin I have a 3-6 ft leader and you dont like it.....Move!!!! but I hate the preachers on political correctness for fishing.

When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

First I wanted thank everyone for the feed back. I love this website. I knew there was a type of fly that people were drifting I pulled a line out of the river and there was a little fly on it so my buddy grabed it and used it got a hit then lost it go figure. One morning I was out at the Reiter and a couple of old timers doubled and I was trying to see what they were using and it looked like little flies. I was out at Reiter again and the same guys fish on . So Wooly buggers.

maybe try some egg patterns or intruder flies (when the water is a off color)
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

Do you think I should use a little black corky with these or just drift by self?
