how to cure eggs

Post by Bassin253 » Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:54 am

Can someone tell me the process of curing eggs? I really wanna try hard to get my first steelhead this year and think bobber and eggs might be the ticket so if I can somehow find a way to catch a salmon this year which isn't easy and lucky enough for it to be a hen I would really like to find out the process start to finish on how to cure the eggs. Thank you in advance

I take my eggs and put them in a ziplock bag with some pro cure. I put that in the fridge and turn and flip them a few times every hour or so and i leave them in there for about 24 hours or so. Then I take them out and I personally use nitril gloves for the rest of the process. I take them out of the zip lock and lay em on cardboard to dry. I use a fan over them to help. I again flip them every now and then. When they are dry I will cut them into bait size pieces. I put some borax into a ziplock baggy and start tossin in the eggs. I shake the bag up after I put some in then add more and shake until they are all in there. If they are gonna be used up in a month or so Ill stick them in the fridge, if longer freeze them.
More fish please!

Most important rule: Bleed the fish right away. I am in the process of trying to perfect curing. I have to get another refrigerator now. I have a bunch of fresh cured eggs that are taking up a lot of space. I don't want to freeze them right now, but I better do something or the boss of the house is going to toss all of my bait crap in the garbage. :-# [-o< [-o< [-o<

"I have a bunch of fresh cured eggs that are taking up a lot of space."

Then get out there and FISH MORE jens! LOL.

No wait, you might end up with even more eggs if you have found the fish... :-k

You are right, time to hunt for a fridge. Tell the boss she can then store more stuff too so it is a win-win for you both:)

I have been curing mine simply. Butterfly the skeins, sprinkle with borax, dry them about 12 hours, borax them a little more. Then throw them in ziplocs with a borax/salt/sugar mixture and shake. Put in the freezer. Mayeb I shoulda put them in the fridge but then the Boss woud probably have said something:-$

Keep in mind that you can in fact over cure your eggs, they will become hard and shrink and shrivel up. So be careful with cures like flinginpoohs. If this does happen put them in the fridge and they will plump back up

Bassin253, since you are in Federal Way if it gets to November and you haven't hit a hen salmon let me know and I will save some eggs for you :) Just remind me in November. I got a couple hen chinook so far and don't get out much to fish so should have enough. I probably won't have the time to get after the steelhead much anyway:-({|= :-({|= LOL.
Good luck though in getting that hen and better a first steelhead!
