best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
First I know this is a loaded question But honestly I am tired of buying line! for my casting reels I know what I like suffix in 20lb for salt Pier bottom fishing and salmon and also Maxima 10lb green I am not a fan of the 15 lb maxima camelon line doesn't seem to get the distance I get with the 10lb.
But for most all my spinning reels I have powerpro line and would like to go with a mono line all weights considered for salmon on down to pan fish. would like to know what you like best about it and durability.
as for what I fish anything legal and edible.

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
Maxima 8 - 12 pound test or power pro 10 - 30 pound test. if you get fresh line that hasn't sat around on the shelf, Maxima will out last any other line. I've used it since I was six years old, it's cheap, it doesn't break, stands up to line fray, it's just outstanding. When it gets curls, soak it overnight in fabric softener and rinse it off well and you're good to go. But you know this, you use it.
I've used the p-line hydro float for float fishing, and I love it. It's doesn't last as long as power pro, which I also love and use almost exclusively. I've used the fluoro lines every once in a while, and they are really fun, but they've never lasted me as long as I like, and I hate re spooling. I love braid, you can feel every last tug of the fish, bottom, stick and it doesn't break. Your leader will snap or your knot wil come undone before it breaks. If you use it properly, you won't leave any on the bottom. You can get way more on a spool for the same pound test, and it lasts forever. But you know that you use it.

Just my 2 cents but I prefer Izorline. I tried powerpro but I'm not getting the distance so far that I do with Izorline. And don't get me started on P-Line.

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
hahahahah, yea, it's a preference thing for sure. I know guys that swear by the 500 yards spools of mono they got at walmart for 2 dollars.

For salmon i used 17lb test for rivers and the salt.
For trout I use either 6 or 8 pound test.
I use Berkley Triline XT.

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
I like the braid I got off the net Spectra extreme braid. I got a spool of like 1500 yds for 34 bucks off ebay. 30lb test. Ive spooled up 7 different reels now and still have one or two more spool jobs to go. I hate Pline with a passion. Izor line ive finally used for leaders. Ive hauled in a few nice steelies on it. Maxima what can I say love it. But honestly For my leaders my favorite line is 14lb spiderwire mono. Its thinner and its really some strong stuff. Ive hauled in 20lb plus kings on it. If Im trout fishing I have an ultra light rod I use 4lb spiderwire mono and 2lb leaders.
More fish please!
RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
p line flouracarbon line is Garbage IMO Knots came loose broke under minimal pressure expensive for the issues I had with it knots would slip. knots from fishn fools to polamar also bait loops. I have a couple rolls of that junk I use it now just for leaders lol I find uses for all these spools of line I get. I am probly in to line a few hundred bucks tring to find what works for me.
p line Hydrofloat would be a different story as i never used it. but after the floura carbon it put a bad taste in my mouth.
I was under the impression some lines work better for cast reels then spinning reels? I am guessing I am wrong on this though. Well wrong to a point Suffix I use is a stiff and sturdy line on my bait caster for the Pier and salmon, I can launch that bad boy a good distance, But by looking at it it does not seem it will do all to well for a Spinning setup?
Maxima I like the green I think the camelon is a little too thick for a small baitcaster I was only able to load 212 ft not yards and got rats nest in the reel every other cast. I will give it a difference in 5lbs test ratings. as in 10 maxi green to 15 maxi cam.
Walmart line I use for Leaders also main reason I bought that. I will never buy Seren in the walmart bulk spools that stuff breaks real easy 20# seems more like 5# as my maxima and flouracarbon held up better than that stuff. the big game big spools make great leaders for salt as colors don't matter for the bottom fish and holds knots well.
now for the Braid lines I heard rumors they are going to ban that on the rivers this year also. Key work Rumors people talking on the rivers. I have that on my shara 4000 spinning reel the pro line hi vis yellow I love it that stuff is tonka tuff. granted it is 50lbs rated I would say a little over kill but when i went to get a set up thats what I was said would work the best for salmon. I find 10lb maxima works great also 20lb suffix does work great also.
Suffix pulled a Crabpot on a pier in pulled it a good 50 yards atleast to the pier lifted the line to the crab pot un tangled my line and dropped the bouy back in the water next to the Pier so we all could fish with out getting tangled in the bouy line to the pot. and on top of that not in season to Crab!

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
Maxima Chamelon is really bad on spinning reels, it's way too stiff, so go with the Ultrgreen. The Ultragreen is really a great all around line and I have used it in the 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 20lb ratings without any complaints. It has great knot strength, vanishes in the water, has low memory and though not as abrasion resistant as the Chamelon is pretty tough and kink resistant to boot. I use 6lb as a mainline for my spincast panfish/trout setup which has also hauled in its fair share of bass. If you are looking for maximum casting distance, manageablility and durability try Spiderwire Ultracast. The nice thing about the braided/fused lines is their resistance to degradation from UV light and heat. If you take care of your mono and store it in a cool dark enviroment it will last many seasons, leave it out where the sun can get to it or cook it, like your car/trunk, and it goes to pot quickly. I've had nothing but bad experiences with flurocarbon of any brand as a main line for spinning reels, too stiff and the memory is just terrible.

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
Most monos are too stiff and hard for use on spinning reels. The "springiness" that makes lines like Maxima & P-line work so well on baitcasters just leads to loops and coils tangling on spinning reels. Co-polymers are a bit softer than the "hard" lines and have less stretch than the "soft" monos that work so well on spinning reels. Braids and fused lines are thinner and have less stretch than monos , and far stronger for equal diameters. For pure spinning reel usage the best lines are Stren and Trilene XL. Smooth, soft, and can cast much further than a hard mono. Their main drawbacks are stretch and durability. You need to change the soft lines after several trips as they degrade faster than the hard lines. This is offset by a lower cost.
My personal preferences are Trilene for 2 to 8 lb for fresh water spinners. Maxima UG for bait casters in fresh water. Maxima treasure for saltwater. Power Pro braid for float fishing. One line won't do it all well. Your mileage may vary.

I put 30 lb power pro on my curado and I love it! I had maxima on it at first, 8 lb ultra green and it got a few more rats nests than I cared for, just having the first bait cast reel i've owned since I was ten. if you put the ten lb on you can fit the whole spool and it works well, I like the thicker stuff for better manageability.dicinu wrote:ok will Braid work better on a bait caster then mono?

I have a rod and reel for just about everything I do from Bass to trout to salt and a few salmon steelhead rods. I have 2 caster rods and 1 spinner for salmon steelhead.wolverine wrote: Most monos are too stiff and hard for use on spinning reels. trout I double up also as I use one for both and the same one and one.
I always have 2 poles with me on the water.
I have a moto better to have it and not need it then to not have it and need it. I alway carry double reels one each with me when I am on the water also.
so the various lines thought/comment works for me!

I think I am leaning towards Maxima ug for the spinning reels if it does as good as the bait casters I will be very pleased with it.
all my poles stay in my man cave nothing in the garage but the tackle boxes. I will test these out on the spinning reel I have some extra 10 left over!
I have one line on my sons pole I forgot the name of it I love this stuff I will have to ask wholesale sports it cast easy and very durable for the abuse my son puts on his gear. and he was casting and keeping up with me. I almost want to say it is the Spiderwire ultracast I am not 100% actually I am not 50% sure as I start to second guess myself. it was free I guess that was my xmas present for spending so much money in the store. I will cut a Piece off and have them match it up I do know it is 10Lb test.

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
For me it's kind of all over the place.... I like a softer rod and braid line. But then If it's really cold I prefer mono because it holds less water. I especially like braid on spinning reels.....zero memory.
Now for Salt and downriggers it's gotta be mono.

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
I like the braid on the Spinning reels The main reason I want to change is and or switch for a different option and also get something less expensive as I tend to end up in trees alot powerpro is my line of choice for braid I love how well it stays together. as for the cold yeah I cannot fish with it in freezing weather it does hold too much water and clogs the tip of the rod. found that out on closing day of the 115th on the Puyllap. my wife used that pole I used my bait caster and didn't have a issue as I used Mono.

is there any truth to braid being banned on some or all of the waters here in WA? I been to a few rivers and heard people saying this was supposed to happen this year?

RE:best fishing line to use on a spinning reel?
I'm fairly new to braid. Put some powerpro 30lb on my spinning reel last year. The stuff is awesome for setting the hook and casting, but it puts out some really nasty rats nests occasionally. However, I've found that with a little patience and a pair of hemostats, the nests all come out fairly easily and it doesn't do any damage to the line. Very happy with that. I do add about 6-8 feet of mono or fluorocarbon leader to the end. I think I'll go back to mono on spinning reels and stick to braid on the casting reels in the future though, just as a personal preference. I've always used Stren mono for my spinning reels and have been happy with it, but don't stick to any one brand at this point. I've got P-line on my new spinning reel right now.....but it has yet to touch water, so will have to see how it performs. Hopefully sooner than later.

The people that complain about braid are those that havent used it or dont know how to use it. Well also noobs that heard that its bad so they form an oppinion on something they heard and not anything that they know for a fact themselves. Braid wont be banned from the rivers next year. They will ban felt boots before they ban braided line. When a few more people learn to fish and to stop crying the rivers will be better for everyone.Bodofish wrote:I think that falls into the catagory of sniveling whiners doing a little too much wishing.dicinu wrote:is there any truth to braid being banned on some or all of the waters here in WA?
