REMINDER - using bait when fishing

Post by Stacie Kelsey » Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:47 pm

When fishing with bait, all TROUT (except STEELHEAD) equal to or greater than the minimum size are counted as part of the daily limit whether kept or released.

Just a reminder for all anglers. Seeing this in my area a lot recently.

gotta a question bout that. if i have my 2 trout over 15 inches in the cooler and i catch another (which i have to release) do that release still count against my limit?
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

I think it bears reminding folks what is considered to be bait.

The regs define it as: Bait, anything that attracts fish or shellfish by scent and/or flavor. This includes any device made of feathers, hair, fiber, wood, metal, glass, cork, leather, rubber, or plastic, which uses scent and/or flavoring to attract fish or wildlife.

Examples of fishing with bait would be:
1. A spoon, plug, spinner, fly etc. smeared with smelly jelly or similar product.
2. Any Powerbait or Gulp! product.
4. Scented plastics of any type.
5. WD-40 or similar product sprayed on your lure.

If you catch a fish that is not equal to the the minimum size and you release it, that fish does not count towards your limit.

Look now, the regs for selective gear fishing aren't all that confusing. Handling rules require that if you use a net it has to be knotless unless otherwise specified under the special rules of the lake or river you are fishing. And sad as it would be to do so, if you are in a C&R only lake, you need to let that bleeding fish go no matter what. On a C&R lake, there is no limit to the number of fish you may catch and release.

I can see this happening if I was anchored and had one rod drowning a worm and casting a lure with the other. To me it seems if you catch the fish on a lure that is not scented or using bait, you may release it and not have it count towards your quota. The point being that fish hooked using bait tend to swallow trhe hook and are more likely to be mortally wounded because of it. Now, that being said, I would pose the question to WDFW enforcement and keep a printed copy of their answer on hand.

Edited after I re-read your question.

I'm not sure if G-Man's answer is correct actually- I'll ask the Enforcement guys...

also a reminder that kokanee are classified in the rules as "trout"

so, when using baits/scent/flavor to catch them, same rule applies with respect to released kokes counting towards the limit. I see postings from guys at various boards talking about catching and releasing a couple dozen kokes, and keeping just the biggest ones

Good point, especially since kokane seem to loose scales, their protective slime and bleed just by looking at them.

I dont think anyones taking offense Dog. Im pretty sure people who use this forum (so I would like to think) are responsible and read up on the rules and regs BEFORE they fish the lakes/rivers. That is the responsability of hunters and anglers alike. I see things all the time that disgust me. Like how the indians can net everywhere and I find about 200 salmon carcasses (heads and fillets on intact) dumped in the water at the black river boat launch. I did call that in by the way. And to my dismay it is legal for them to do that. There needs to be more threads like this. It clears stuff up and gets the word out. Thanks Stacie.

maybe 1 of the "OVERLORDS" or some 1 could slide this down to the trout/kok area...so's a bait/trout fisherperson might be more likely to see it
