Carbon Monoxide warning sticker required for all vessels

Post by Mike Carey » Tue Jul 26, 2011 5:38 pm

I went to get my 18 ft seaswirl licensed today and the lady handed me a 6"x2" sticker giving the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. She says that if you get inspected and don't have this sticker on your boat you can get a ticket.

The back of the stickers states it is WA law requiring the owner of a "vessel" to apply the sticker to the interior of the boat where passengers can see it.

I asked does that apply to all boats and she told me anything with a motor on it. So I grabbed one for my 15 ft boat - which is totally open to air, no enclosure. Now, I haven't researched the law - are you aware of this new sticker law? And how silly is it to require a carbon monoxide warning sticker for an open to air boat - unless you plan to run it in your garage or stick your face in the exhaust and breath deep?? BTW, the sticker says to get fresh air if you suspect CM poisoning. I guess if I'm in my 15 footer I need to jump in the lake and get away from the boat.

OK, here's the link:

First heard about it last summer, don't remember how, maybe saw it in the WDFW pamplet so I called and she sent me one. Never got one when I re-licensed the boat over the years. I think it's been required for a couple/few years now.

I'm thinking on an all open boat if the motor is upwind you could die. So NEVER pilot/drive the boat downwind so the motor and exhuast is upwind.

SO, you'll have to have 2 launches, one at each end of the lake. Launch the boat at the downwind launch, drive the rig to the upwind launch, hike back to the other launch and go fishing. And HOPE the wind doesn't change direction. Do it all over and over if you want to make more than one drift/drag the flashers thru the trout schools. And hope you have TIME to do it again.
Tom.

In the past if we smelled exhaust, we'd just turn the boat. :-)

Yep, got em with both of my registrations this year. Seems a little silly on a whaler and an open row boat.

beyond silly.

Some bureaucrats with way too much time on their hands and not a basic understanding of noxious fumes.

Next up - people with electric trolling motors will be required to place stickers warning about electricution risks.

Washington law requires that all new and used power-driven vessels sold within Washington (other than PWCs) display an approved carbon monoxide warning sticker on the interior of the vessel where it will be visible to passengers.

Got this info from, page 43 - http://www.boat-ed.com/washington/handbook/book.html

EDIT - Here is the info from the Wa DOL - http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistrati ... icker.html

Instead of this and the online boating safety crap, how about a real test. If your new to boating you should have to take a driving test and demonstrate you abilities to operate your boat, back your trailer and dock / trailer your boat.

Dont get me wrong I hate to see the government sticking its nose in and requireing anymore tests/fees/stickers whatever but seems like the "Legal" tests but im sure sick of the morons at the launch.

Whats next a sharp hook warning our tackle boxes and safety covers on our hooks when not in use?? Sure wish they would just leave us alone!!#-o

I love the smell of exhaust in the morning. It reminds me of .....Victory.Oh wait thats Napalm. I have about 8 stickers that Ive recieved through the years. In Seattle they've been handing those out a few years now.

The law has been in effect for at least 5 years an I think a lot more. I get a new sticker every year with my tabs. Come to think of it we've got one every year for the little boat a Camano too. Had that one since 86.

Interesting, I have never gotten a sticker. I have renewed online the last several years. Maybe the License Agency I use just doesn't stick them in the envelope.

This started with people who have I/Os or inboards and swim/sun decks above the exhaust. There have been numerous deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning because moron operators leave their engines running with people laying on the swim/sun deck. Duh. Learned about this about 5 years ago when my wife and I went through the long Coast Guard course. What it doesn't really apply to are outboards because there's no place to trap exhaust fumes like on an I/O or inboard, and unlike those, the exhaust is totally under water.

So, as a knee jerk reaction, WA lawmakers decided we don't have enough intelligence to understand why I/Os and inboards need the CO stickers and those with outboards really don't and they passed legislation requiring all boats to have these stickers. Yep, like that's really going to make a difference. :-"

They cant catch tweekers ripping off cars. How are they gonna catch decal thieves? I put mine in my boat in 07. It still looks good. I save all the other ones.
