To post or not to post

Post by Gringo Pescador » Wed Oct 10, 2007 8:45 am

When I was lurking, I was only posting reports once in awhile, and usually only when I had greater than average success on an outing. Now that I shook off the shyness and become a full blown pain in the a$$:clown: I am posting more and more often with good and bad outings. But that makes me wonder, how much is too much?

Questions for you all:
How often do you post reports compared to how often you fish?
What do you prefer to see in a report?
If someone is hitting the same place every day for a week, would you rather see a post a day, or 1 post documenting 7 days of fishing?
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Gringo, first of all you are not posting like a pain in the .... I for one like hearing from you and am glad that you are no longer shy. It's part of the evolutionary process of this site. Lurk for a while, register, lurk some more, post a little here and there, and eventually you get to the point of being comfortable with people on this site that you look forward to visiting a spell with your friends.

How much is too much?

Forum Discussions: Let 'er rip if you want it's about exchanging information and ideas, but it is also about having fun with friends and even joking around with your buds. It's community. Just like friends at church, not every conversation is about the Bible or church stuff, it's about friend stuff and common interests. The binding glue is that we all like fishing and like to share what we know and hear from others who do the same.

Fishing Reports: I personally don't post nearly as much as I should, but I'm getting better about. I believe that if it is worthwhile information that could help someone else, I generally report it.

What do I like to see in a report? Weather, water temps, techniques, color and types of lures. And of course how they did.

If someone is fishing the same place day in and day out, then a overall report should be generally enough. Just my thought, but that's really up to the individual if he feels that a second report is warranted because of some unique circumstance. But I don't feel that seven reports for the week serves much of a purpose.

Forum: I'd say post whenever you get the urge. The people around here that do are all very well liked. I think it's okay to post reactionary comments that aren't insightful or even helpful if you feel the need too because it let's people know your sense of humor and thought process better.

Fishing reports: This thought has crossed my mind too. Sometimes I'll go fishing, report it. Then have two extremely similar experiences later in the week and not report them because the time frame is so close and nothing has changed. I often times can only get about an hour or two of fishing in, so sometimes I feel that might do a lake or river injustice if I give it a 2-outta-5 for getting skunked when I was there for such a brief time.

Personally, I tend to not repost if my fishing experience was the same a day or two later, whether it was good or poor (okay, if it was really good I'd post it). WAlakes.com is so comprehensive now though I think I'm going to start reporting everything, even the little similar trips, because it's pretty amazing that in ten years I'll be able to look back and see what days I was fishing!

good replies. Fish-or-man hit the nail on the head. I can pull up just about every meaningful fishing trip I've taken over the past ten years. I have all those memories, pictures, etc to draw on. My perspective is this is an online fishing diary and it gives me one location to keep all my reports and memories organized. Further, when the new revision is finished, you'll see even more functionality develope with these reports and I think you'll be happy you start posting on a regular basis. Just my opinion, no pressure. :chef:

PS, just looking back at pictures of my two boys growing up is worth the effort to post.

When it comes to the forums I'll post more comments than I should, but fewer than I actually type (about half the time I type a response and then delete it before posting it- especially as of late :-& )

As far as fishing reports go, I'm not as diligent as I should be. If I go to the same lake more than once in a weekend I will just combine the two reports. I can't wait to see the unveiling of the new format and hope it fixes some of the little things that could be better, like the color & lure selections for example; of course this level of detail may not sit well with our more secretive anglers. Speaking of fishing reports, what happened to my Beaver report from last weekend?

I try to post every trip I go out... but in reality I more likely to post the ones where I have a good picture I want to include. If I were to take several trips to the same lake within a day or so, I'd probably combine them. Looking back over my reports for the summer I wish I had been better about recording the water temp and weather conditions. Also, I never did post a report for my week long trip to Curlew...just never got around to it.

I think Dave Newby's reports are some of the best ones out there. There short, concise, and contain a wealth of information from a top angler.

I try to post every time I go, but I try to have some idea of sense about what is nuisance and what is not. Before this forum was made, I posted much more diligently, because I thought the site needed as much as it could get.
