Best line for Salmon fishing in Rivers.

Post by MikeFishes » Tue Oct 16, 2007 10:53 pm

I got a salmon setup from Fred Meyers (they were 50% off and I couldn't resist. I'm a cheapskate) and I need some line. I picked up some flurocarbon mono (10# test) from Joes tonight, but I remember reading something about how the salmon were good at seeing ultraviolet colors. Does this mean that this line will be a great huge sign not to bite my lures?

I prefer the braided spider wire it's super strong low to no stretch very sensitive I get great hook sets with pretty abrasion resitance.I pair it up with a hefty flourocarbon leader.tight lines

Stick away from Maxima...Too heavy if your doing any float fishing/drift fishing...Can't keep your line off the water if using a float and it's darn heavy when using it for drift fishing...

usually when fishing rivers for salmon i'll use this line:

hey fishy those are some sweet spots u have, come a little closer so i can see the color of your gums.
now, this doesn't always work, but i still try...

Maxima is not very good for spinning type reels because it dosn't cast as well on the spinning type reels, howwever it is my fathers and my choice for drift fishing, he has been fishing for steelhead for 40 years now. It casts pleanty fine for medium sized rivers, is super strong, it is fairly abrasion ressistant, and it difts pleanty goood for us, howwever we drift smalll chunks of pencile weigt with eggs and yarn. We havn't done much float fishing. Unfortunatly MAXIMA line is very expensive, esspecily the leader wheels. I have heard that for float fishing it is better to use braided because it is light, and slides easily. The disadvanteges with braided line are that when you are fighting a fish there is no strech in the braided line so if you get the fish realy close to you and it decides to make a sudden run it can break the line.

What kind of setup are you useig, spinning or levlewind? Will you be float fishing or drifting with pencil/slinky weights?

i heard use clear line and also heard pline and berkly big game work real good i used berkly big game for my steelhead trip and i caught so i think its good and its pretty cheap compared to some other line i saw but i would go with stronger line 10# that seems offly small for a big fish....

The first day I started catching salmon I used this line]
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
