So you're gonna go to the lake, start drinking cocktails, while hand-lining the backing with beads on it? [laugh]

Have you tried the small soft plastic stops (the kind where you have to thread your mainline through the plastic in 3-4 little holes)? I just started using them and they are a dream to cast. don't notice it on the guides at all, and they hold well.

However, I managed to catch a branch on a cast the other day and the stop must of been pulled against a guide or something because it broke off.

I'm going to continue to use them, but if another one breaks on me, I'm going back to the pre-tied stops.

ive tried the "dog bone" and "ladder" style bobber stops but ehh, when i cast the line catches on the stop and flunks my cast, a bit bulky, especially on smaller reels or baitcasters

I use the 4x6mm ones (they are actually smaller than that closer to 2.5mm x 4mm) and trim them down with an exacto knife. They seem to work fine with all my rods suitable for float fishing for salmonids except my 2 rods with microguides.

Just tie a small nail knot with 20# backing, it's so small it it really makes the bead a necessity.

About any of them work, even the red and white ones but as I prefer nice things, I like to go with the thill balsa floats.

I actually use Pikers - but I "gringo-ize" them 1st. I don't use the little plastic piece with the hole in the side that juts of the bottom so I take off with my bench grinder. Then I don't like the red top - not enough color and the color is hard for me to see on the water, so I tape off all but the top 2" and spray paint the top with a plastic primer then florescent yellow (couple coats of each).
The reasons I like em are:
*They are easy to string - I use 30# braid for my mainline for float fishing, the Beau Macs you put the line in and there is a lip inside that makes it a PIA to get it on through.
*They are skinny - less splash when they hit the water.
*The are actually tough as heck. I just swapped one out last spring because it was taking on water - I had it on for two years.
*They are clear, you don't have to switch out when the water gets low & clear.
*Again, they are skinny, very sensitive on the water. Very easy to read what is going on below the float.
*Once more, they are skinny, less resistance when the fish hits it.
*and lastly, they are skinny - I can switch weights without switching out my float, lighter weight just makes the float ride higher in the water. I use the same float/weight setup for everything from 1/16oz jigs to floating big ol clumps of eggs for kings.

The downside:
*They are expensive (single float is about the same price as a 2-pack of Beau Macs)- if you lose a lot of floats you probably wouldn't want to be using them (unless you are upriver from me 8-[ )
*When the wind picks up you really notice how light they are.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I use Drennan Pikers or Zepplins depending on water conditions.

next choice would be RedWing Phantoms.
http://www.redwingtackle.com/amenu/float.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They are $4-6 each but work awesome and are less fragile than they appear to be. The fish never notice 'em.

Ted's Sportscenter in Lynnwood is where I go. I see 'em on Ebay/Amazon as well as some of the smaller e-tailers that cater more to the non-bass crowd like Fish-USA.

clear drift floats are great they look like those drennon floats(looks like one copied the other)but they are great floats. Can be hard to find but 3 rivers has them as does teds. or you can order them thru sidedrifter.com for $3 each and shipping was less then a buck on 4 of them.

i hate how everything is almost all bass oriented now, i want more choices for salmon rods and gear, i wish cabelas would put on a new model of rods specifically for salmon and steelhead fishing

They do...I think they are called the Fish Eagle 50 series. I just wish other companies like Damiki, Denali, Powell, etc would make steelhead/salmon rods. I just don't like supporting the megacorps and I like supporting the more niche type manufacturers. I would buy a FethaStyx or XRod if they were a little more reasonable priced.
