SQUAXIN ISLAND, Wash. -- The Department of Fish & Wildlife is now investigating a video that has surfaced showing a group of people on a canoe killing a deer in the waters near Squaxin Island.
The entire capture and killing of the buck is seen in the 12-minute video. Once the paddlers surround the buck, a man swings at it with an oar. The buck swims away but a couple minutes later, a paddler jumps into the water and attempts to drown the deer.
Another man, seen earlier in the video with a hunting knife, then dives in to help. They bring the deer to the side of the canoe, where it dangles, struggling for life.
Tribal council member Ray Peters says the group was not out there for a sanctioned canoe event and their actions will not be tolerated.
"I was deeply disturbed by the video," Peters said. "From a tradition and cultural standpoint, that is not how we harvest deer and wildlife."
The video ends when the crew is paddling toward shore, carrying the dead deer on board.
"It gives all tribal members a black eye," says nearby resident Jigger Davis, "because now they're perceived as the public's going to see this."
Department of Fish and Wildlife officials found the deer remains inside a tote that was on a truck. They say that vehicle belongs to the man who eventually killed the buck.
Officials are still trying to identify some of the people in the video, because at this time, there's no tribal or state deer hunting season that's open near Squaxin Island.

I read that, I don't need to watch the vid. I hope the tribe actually has BALLS to prosecute the unsportsmen---non-men killers.

This is especially close to home to me. My dad's place is down on Steamboat Island, right next to Squaxin. We had trouble with the tribal boats coming up on our beaches and taking the oysters that we farmed. They'd just come up and empty out the bags, wipe out our steamers and just be altogether rude. Now they're bonking deer. It's a pretty awful video, the news version censored the bad parts out.

Man, I hope the punishment fits the crime. If it is banishment, that would be a pimp slap to the face of all law abiding sportsmen, and woman!!.

poaching isn't tribal or non tribal. this behavior comes from scum of both sides of that coin, need to get rid of the special benefits so people can see criminals for who they are rather than whether or not they are tribal.
Re: canoers kill deer with paddle.
The only thing the tribe will do different is to worn there people to not post videos for us Non natives to see. The only way it will end is if the federal government ends all treaties and we all abide by normal rules.
Re: canoers kill deer with paddle.

I will bet there will be no fines or penalties assessed on these losers. Ahh, the benefits of being a soverign nation.

I'm simply tired of the whole BS that goes with tradition that the tribes use on a regular basis...about time they became part of our society...i blame all the casino addicts who are filling their coffers.
