Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
I am going to install my bimini top and I am using their supplied screws. My question is one that I have never even thought about. Galvanic corrosion. Do I have to worry about that while drilling into the metal or having the screws in there? The instructions recommend Duralac (galvanic corrosion barrier) but That is just a paste and will wear away sooner than later Im sure. Do I need the duralac? Is this a concern I should have? Thanks! For reference this is a Lowe 1672 HD Welded aluminum boat.

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Really depends on how much salt use it will get. Since you won't be running any electricity through it, I'd just be concerned with getting an anode in magnesium and just roll with it.

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Since the motor is bolted on, would that anode be sufficient? It wont get a ton of salt, but it will see the salt. Especially with the puke and skok getting all boogered. ![Razz [razz]](./images/smilies/msp_razz.gif)

any loose wires or wire ends will cause problems.

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
I'd still coat the screws with the Duralac (Eck is another excellent product) when you put it together to make sure you won't have any problems with corrosion where you've broken the paint film. For the small investment in time to apply, it's worth the piece of mind. ![ThumpUp [thumbup]](./images/smilies/msp_thumbup.gif)

Having never used duralac, does it harden on the screws or is it just a paste?

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
I've never used Duralac so can't say. I use something similar to Eck and it's a non-hardening paste.ResQ wrote:Having never used duralac, does it harden on the screws or is it just a paste?

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
So do you have to re apply it periodically then?
Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Just got to thinking. They used stainless to attach the motor AND transducer to the hull. Maybe I am just over thinking on this, but I just really dont want to eff up a new boat lol.

Nope, good to think that way I tend to over think everything too.

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Sorry, thought you already had the Duralac. Try calling a PPG paint supply outlet since Eck is a PPG product. If they don't have it, they should be able to get it. FWIW, you don't need to reapply it unless you remove and reinstall the hardware. Just coat the screws/nuts/bolts as applicable and per the instructions, then mount your bimini.ResQ wrote:does anyone know where to get Duralac or Eck? I have called and checked and cannot find any.

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Duralac is a compound manufactured outside of the United States. It used to be fairly easy to find however since the US implemented the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) program, it now is a bit harder to come by as it contains some compounds that have not been cleared for import to the States. If you can find it, it will be in stores that cater to yachts or private aircraft maintenance. If you can't find Duralac or Eck locally, give Aircraft Spruce on-line a shot, they have Eck and other products that will get the job done and at good a price.

Find an auto body paint supply store that sells PPG automotive paint.

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
I cannot find anything. Im thinking that since I have searched this and have not heard of this before, that I may be one of a very select few to search this out to coat screws on a small aluminum boat. Should I just go ahead and attach it without since I cannot find anything?

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Coat the screws with some Permatex Anti-Seize, you can find it at any auto parts store. Not as good as Eck, but will get the job done. ![Wink [wink]](./images/smilies/msp_wink.gif)

Re: Galvanic Corrosion and bimini top?
Was at the boat shop picking up my buddies boat and talked to the mechanic on the issue. He said he used dialectic grease like ox-gard. It's what they use on breaker panels and such. So I picked some up.
