Public survey available on Puget Sound
recreational fisheries enhancement program
OLYMPIA – One lucky person will win a fishing rod and reel just by taking a short survey on a state program established to enhance recreational fisheries in Puget Sound.
The survey is designed to gauge public understanding of the Puget Sound Recreational Salmon and Marine Fish Enhancement Program. The survey is available through March 31 on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/salmon/psrfef/survey.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
The program was created by the state Legislature in 1993 to improve and promote recreational fishing in Puget Sound and support sustainable populations of salmon and marine bottomfish. The program is supported by revenue generated from the sales of certain fishing licenses.
Participants in the survey will be entered into a random drawing for a rod and reel. The winner of the drawing will be selected in late April.
Information from the survey will help state fishery managers shape future fishing opportunities in Puget Sound, said Ryan Lothrop, Puget Sound recreational salmon manager for WDFW.
“This is a short survey designed to give us a better idea of people’s understanding of the program and where our efforts should be focused in the future,” said Lothrop. “We are looking at how best to improve recreational fisheries in Puget Sound and our efforts to introduce people to sportfishing.”

Re: Meeting on Sports Fisheries in Puget Sound
This was an interesting meeting.
Did you know that the amount of money raised for Puget Sound Salmon Hatchery is the same as it was in 1993? That they get $10 for every saltwater or combo license sold? Of course rising costs of taking care of the fish is cutting into that money. So the raises that we have paid are not for raising more fish for Puget Sound. Puget sound is defined as area 5-13.
They will have to go to the Legislative in order to change that $10 so that inflation will eat so much of the money.
I believe that most people don't even know about this part of WDFW.
They figure out how many fish to raise for PS and North Of Falcon sets the regs.

Re: Meeting on Sports Fisheries in Puget Sound
It's unfortunate but appears that WDFW is stuck in the middle of state politics. I certainly appreciate the information. I wouldn't mind if our fishing license had the "stamp" feature/option so as long as those extra funds went specifically to the fishery that had the "stamp" and not some type of general fund where other state agencies can collect and distribute in ways they see fit. Just one angler's ramblings. Thanks for the information Toni!
Re: Meeting on Sports Fisheries in Puget Sound
The $10 from any salt or combo license goes specifically to the Puget Sound Recreational Salmon and Marine Fish Enhancement Program. One problem I saw was that $10 in 1993 bought a lot more than 2013 but they have to manage with 1993 money.kevinb wrote:It's unfortunate but appears that WDFW is stuck in the middle of state politics. There are a lot of river fishing that benefits from the Puget Sound Recreational Salmon and Marine Fish Enhancement Program but they haven't contributed because they only buy freshwater license.
